Ever thought about driving around 40 miles in a day and not having to spend even a single drop of fuel and virtually without damaging the environment with harmful car emissions. Well with the launch of Chevrolet Volt, which is planned for the late 2010 or early 2011, all this will be true. It is one of the models which General Motors, despite their business viability and sustenance problems are willing to come out in the market as per their plans.

Chevrolet Volt is a hybrid electric car, the power for which is procured from the lithium – ion batteries which are under its hood. The batteries are charged by electrical power or through the gasoline engine. There is no need for an external charging station to charge the Chevrolet Volts batteries. It can be simply done with the help of 120-240V AC electrical outlets, which are a very common sight in homes. The Volt works on a different electrical charging concept when compared with the other electrical car options available in the market.

The electrical motor and internal combustion engine in the Chevrolet Volt are used for propelling and charging the car. On fully charged batteries, the Volt will be able to commute around 40 miles without having to use a single drop of fuel. These 40 miles is equivalent to an entire day’s commute of almost 75% American population. The concept and production model of the Chevrolet Volt have both been showcased by General Motors, although there are stark differences between the two. Volt will sport a 150 hp electric motor and a 1.4 liter 4 cylinder engine for providing power to the 53 kW generator which is installed to run the vehicle.

It is being manufactured to take the Toyota Prius and other competing hybrid vehicles in the market head on. Chevrolet Volt has also been awarded with the 2009 Green Car Vision Award which is given by the Green Car Journal primarily for its ground breaking technological advancement to be used in future cars.
