May 5, 2010 by Yogesh Patel

Everyone would be aware of what Tatkal ticket means in Indian Railways because Indian Railways is the monopoly rail transport run by Indian government. For those who don’t know what is Tatkal Ticket in Indian Railways then this would be helpful.indian railways

What is Tatkal Ticket?

Tatkal quota is a reserved quote as introduced by Indian Railways in which some of seats of a train journey is booked for the emergency travelers but with a premium fee towards the ticket. Like if you have a sudden plan of going to a place tomorrow or day after then you can book tatkal ticket and get secured seats provided the train is full as per normal reservation.

How and where to book Tatkal Tickets?

Tatkal tickets can be booked from any of the Indian Railways recognized Computerized Reservation counters. Tatkal tickets can also be booked through e-ticket facility at IRCTC or through other agent booking like Cleartrip or makemytrip. Tatkal tickets booking starts three days in advance from the commencement of the train journey (including the journey date).

For Example: If today is May 1 and the train starts on May 4 at Bangaluru (your boarding station is Secunderabad) you can book the tickets since its exactly three days as its starts from starting station.

Tatkal booking are allowed in all classes except the First AC class. Please note that waitlist and RAC (Reservation against cancellation) applies in Tatkal tickets too. No concession is allowed is Tatkal booking and you cann’t modify anything once the Tatkal ticket is booked. Tatkal I ticket booking is not possible through IRCTC.

Tatkal tickets are meant for emergency help to the travelers. However there is no confirmation to anyone except the Indian Railways authorities on how many percentages of tickets are reserved under Tatkal quota. Tatkal tickets contributes largely to the profits of Indian Railways since its charged with a premium fees.

    Dear Vinayjee,

Though you can see the Tatkal Quota for different train on the official booking websites, but it will get OPEN TO BOOK only 2 days before. For e.g.
if your journey is from your place to the destination and for e.g. the date is 15th May – than you can book it only on 13th May, though you are viewing it from past 10 -15 days.
If that quota is not available from your place to the destination, you have two options –
book it from the place of origin to the destination or try to find out the nearby major location from where you can get the quota available for your chosen destination.

I hope you got your answer from the above given clarifications. If not pls contact me on 93 25 94 42 82.

    With regards,
    Adityashekhar Gupta

Railways have decided to ban agents from tatkal bookings. Why are these agents targeted and their business stopped the railways should instead concentrate on the people who are standing outside the stations and are selling tickets at exorbitant amounts, where do I go now to book tatkal tickets if these people have been stopped, does railway themselves have a solution. This move by them is just going to increase bribery and corruption within their offices.

Hi Neyaz……just follow the steps i am mentioning below……..

          1. Use Mozilla instead of Explorer.
          2. Open IRCTC and navigate to Quick Book.
          3. Fill in all the necessary details.
          4. Copy the following and replace the IRCTC URL now….. “javascript:void(document.oncontextmenu=null)”…..dont copy the quotes though.
          5.Press Enter
6.Now right click any column/row of Quick Book that u had filled just a while back and click….”Save Entire Form as”. Then click Ok and close.
          7. Now open IRCTC and Quick Book again and Click Alt+J
          8. The entire Quick Book form fills with single click.
          9. Now proceed since u have saved enuf time in filling up the form. It can be repeated with single click everytime u open IRCTC.

Say thanks if it works for you.

          Dhruv

True, this is a very sad moment for customers as well as agents, this is surely going to put the rail sector into a big trouble in terms of revenue as well as corruption. This Step is surely going to promote Touts & dalals in doing their malpractices.
