Fixed : Hi-speed USB device plugged into non-hi-speed USB hub Warning

June 9, 2010 by Amit Bhawani

Problem : I just purchased a new USB Pen Drive of 8Gb storage space and the moment i tried to connect this to my home pc i get a error which says ‘Hi-speed USB device plugged into non-hi-speed USB hub’. The error clearly says that the USB Device is of hi speed and tells me that my USB hub is of slow speed. Is this true? The computer is recently purchased and i dont think its slow because i have got 2Gb of RAM and the Windows XP Operating system. What could be the real issue behind this?

Solution : These kind of errors come up when you plug in a USB 2.0 device into a Port which does not support this. Hence its time you need to upgrade the USB Port and not your complete PC. There could be different error messages which have the same meaning though and there is actually another fix using which you can stop Windows from showing this error and allowing you to use the device though it may under perform because the USB 2.0 port offers more security and speed to the users.

First you need to open ‘Device Manager’. Click on the Start Button > Run > devmgmt.msc > Ok. Next the Device Manager comes up with a list of all the hardware devices available and connected to your computer. Here you need to expand on the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section which is somewhere around the bottom.

USB Device Manager Settings

Now you need to locate the host controller which is giving you the errors. Right click on it and select the Properties > Advanced Option. select the Don’t tell me about USB errors check box.
