How to Permanently Delete Files which cannot be Recovered

December 18, 2008 by Amit Bhawani

Generally whenever you delete a file from your computer, its moved to the Recycle Bin , which when deleted makes sure that the file is completely deleted, but this is wrong because the file is still loaded in your hard drive which is replaced whenever some other files are added to the hard disk. Instead of getting into larger drives lets take a example of a 128 Mb Memory Card, where in if you have take some photos and then deleted them you would feel that the card is empty but that’s just the software which shows this information, in real the data is still available and which can be recovered using data recovery programs.

The best solution for making sure that all the files have been permanently deleted is to format your hard disk, but what if you are looking to delete a very limited number of files permanently and avoid the whole disk formatting process? Here is the Solution for this – SDelete v1.51 from Microsoft TechNet which is a command line utility which can help you in permanently erase files from your PC.

Using SDelete :
SDelete is a command line utility that takes a number of options. In any given use, it allows you to delete one or more files and/or directories, or to cleanse the free space on a logical disk. SDelete accepts wild card characters as part of the directory or file specifier.

Usage: sdelete [-p passes] [-s] [-q]
sdelete [-p passes] [-z|-c] [drive letter]
-c Zero free space (good for virtual disk optimization).
