4 Major Reasons why your Website Traffic goes down

January 27, 2009 by Amit Bhawani

If you are a blogger iam sure you are experiencing a dip in your traffic sometimes around in the year’s time and the reason behind that would be any of the following. You need to always make sure you have setup advanced stats for your websites to find out the source of your visitors and if there is a gain/dip in the total.

1. Holidays Season : This is a very big reason because of which you may find a huge dip in your traffic which can range upto 50% in total and this has always happened to me because i have website which are themed on jobs, employment, career & education and during the holiday season you can find a huge dip. Generally employers surf to the web through their office during free hours and whenver their boss is not available and this is the reason i get a higher visitors rate at the office hours than non-office hours. Since there are a lot of holidays starting from November end ie Thanks Giving Day to the jan first week till New year celebrations, we can expect many holidays and lower visitors because of this.

2. Terrorist Attacks : Many people feel that this does not have any relation with the website’s visitors but it does have. In the month of november 2008 India experienced some really unforgetable days because of the terrorist attacks in mumbai in which many people were killed, because of which most people were watching News channels on television for the latest news or else surfing the news websites for updates on these. These kind of situations can hurt your visitors rate if your websites are offering information/providing services for these areas.

3. Cable Damages : In the last two years i have seen 2 major cable cuts under the sea affecting many countries with very slow internet or total downtime. The reason for slow connections after these cable cuts is that the internet connections are made through alternate lines which cannot handle the high traffic loads and have a lot of drop in packets resulting in slow internet. While the connections are slow, the business owners would try to continue their operatings in the same way, but the casual internet users would try to avoid browsing because of the slow speeds. According to gallup reports nearly Half of Americans Are Frequent Internet Users and if there are these kinds of cable damages then these numbers are going to go down for sure.

4. Virus Attacks : Remember those computer worms which are spread through the emails you send or through the external drives you insert into your USB. These virus can hit web traffic and mainly impacts the servers with malicious code with the servers shut down to clean them up, resulting in loss of traffic. These virus spread very quickly clogging up the web making it damn slow, following which the pc users have to scan down everything from their pc to the emails they recieve and forward.

Do you find any important reasons because of which your website gets hit with very low traffic, why not share them here using the comment form.

I see you got your PR3 back Amit. Congrats on that. Did you have to beg Google for that using the webmaster central account? Would love to know.
