A/B Split Testing with Theme Change – Tracking Income & Page Views

Published by Amit Bhawani on September 21, 2009 – 5:23 pm8 Comments

If you have checked out my blog today i have changed the theme from the previous Arthemia Premium versions whose Developer Licence i have got to a Simple 3 Column design. Here are a few reasons why i have performed this and what is the idea behind this. A/B Testing is generally implemented by website optimization companies in order to find out whats the best in terms of performance and not just in looks. Generally if you find a new blog design you would ask suggestions with your friends regarding the design and you dont look into the performance and track down the results which may be a reason you would be losing some good amount of income and also positive scopes.

Targets to be Achieved 21 Sep – 27 Sep :

  1. Feed Readers : How many Feed Subscribers increased when compared to the last week. The period of September 14th to September shows me that there were a total of 14739 to 14885 feed readers in total of 146 subscribers who subscribed to this blog. Now for a weeks time while i have received 146 readers, if i cross this number on this new theme for the current week then for sure this new theme gets a vote.

  2. Site Loading Time : The previous theme Arthemia Premium had a lot of css files to run in the background along with huge amount of Images which had to be loaded before the post would be visible. Magazine Blog themes generally offer you with small thumbnails on the homepage and category pages which are created using PhpThumb script and this would add up lot of disk usage along with loading speed issues because whenever someone accesses your blog homepage all these small images load up. The current is mostly on CSS stuff and has almost no images and whatever images you currently see are part of the advertisements, article images & feed promoting images. I did a cross check of this theme on multiple browsers and found that it does load quickly everywhere, though you the readers can give a better review on this.
  3. Income from Adsense : I feel that i can expect a higher income with this theme design because of quicker loading though this cannot be really true unless we compare the stats. If your blog loads real quick then you have more chances of making the visitor read more posts, bookmark your blog and if its slower, even while its still loading they may move away to another website just increasing your Bounce Rate which should always be on the lower end.
  4. Maximizing Screen Usage : In most blog themes you would have found that the theme has a lot of blank space left out and you need to make sure that you dont miss out any spaces blank. You can compare you websites area with a Real Estate property offline where you dont leave any rooms or properties vacant and try to make the most of all the available locations. In the same way you can consider your website as a online real estate company where you are going to sell advertisements and make money.
  5. ClickHeat Visual Heatmap

Tracking Clicks with Heat Maps : As previously mentioned its very essential to track clicks on your blog in order to know which is the most clicked area and monetize that section. Generally the Top to Middle Left section of a website is highest viewed in my experiance but this differs from blog to blog and also differs on their styles or templates. I have installed the Visual Heatmap scripts and will be tracking them out to find out whats the best area on my blog and will have my best advertisements there.

Overall this is a 7 Days test to check out which theme is the best one for my blog in terms of performance and not just looks. What other suggestions you have got in your mind about my blog, feel free to share them using the below comment form.
