Alexa Rankings changed drastically Blogs lose Ranks
Home » Tech NewsAlexa ranking system which is generally counted to be wrong by several webmasters have changed their ranking system with improved methodology and now the traffic is tracked from several different sources which may be toolbars installed on user’s computers.
Here are some of the biggest changes i have seen :
Shoemoney.com : Was 2xxx Rank : Now 19818 Rank
Problogger : Was 3xxx Rank : Now 12917 Rank
JohnChow : Was 5xxx Rank : Now 17088 Rank
DigitalPoint : Was 3xxRank : Now 938 Rank
Global Internet Index : Was 66000 Rank : Now 45323 Rank
JimKarter : Was 40xxxRank : Now 187845 Rank
AmitBhawani : Was 70000Rank : Now 54006 Rank
Labnol : Was 19000 Rank : Now 14626 Rank
This clearly shows that Alexa previously used to track down websites based on webmaster’s traffic and give webmaster related websites a better rank but now it seems to be perfectly tracking everything.

When Alexa began displaying rankings in 1998 it was with the goal of showing Alexa Toolbar users how popular any given site was within the Alexa community. We generated the rankings through an analysis of Internet usage by people who use the Alexa Toolbar. Since that time we’ve been delighted to see that the Alexa Rankings have become a yardstick by which website popularity is measured. We are grateful to the thousands of people who come to Alexa.com each day to check the Alexa Rankings.
In recent months we’ve heard from our Alexa users that understanding Internet usage beyond Alexa Toolbar users was increasingly of interest. Ask and you shall receive!
We listened to your suggestions, and we believe that our new rankings system is much closer to what you asked for. We now aggregate data from multiple sources to give you a better indication of website popularity among the entire population of Internet users.
My site’s ranking has changed. Was it wrong before?

The ranking of my Hydroponic website went from 450K to 2.3M.
I don’t really care about the huge drop as long as the system stays consistently so I can use it as a gage to measure the popularity of my site vs the rest of the internet.

I am not sure if they are right or wrong. What I do know, is if they take advantage of the marketing example they will win.
Example: Would you rather buy a large screen TV from a 10,000,000 ranked site or a 10,000 ranked site.
I can safely say, case closed.

Hi , i am 17 year old college guys…I’ve started kids website http://www.BuzziBoy.com on 1 yaer ago, and now it has a rank #892800. intially i was in 3 lacs….
Just watch it how fast the rank is dropping!!!

I got 8k+UV in May’08 & 25k page impression and getting something double this month… then too my alexa for http://www.BollywoodHott.com is far high than what it should be.. I get 1/10th traffic for another blog which has 6digit alexa and the one getting more traffic has 7 digit alexa

It seems most of the big names in blogosphere have lost ranking. Fortunately for me, it’s the other way around. I jumped from 22xxx to 8,696!! Yay!!

Indeed alot of blogs and website are affected from going up to going down. But its a good thing that i saw your alexa rank is better.

I’m new to blogging. My blog’s rank has moved up by 300K in this week slightly slower than my previous weeks movements of 1000K per week.
Any idea what other sources they are looking to apart from this toolbar?

My site jumped from 207k to 150k overnight. woohoo. My traffic has been going downhill the last month or two, so I was shocked when I saw the jump this morning.

My Blog got a boost of 10k straight compared to what was last night. I know from my traffic sources that kind of people land up on my site are not geeky. They are very regular people who look around tips on computer usage or anything similar to that. Good news for me anyway

It does not help you much but at times some advertisers would advertise on your website based on your alexa ranks.

Asim these changes were made today itself and if your rankings are dropping from a couple days then thats another issue. Check out your website’s rankings today and see the changes.

Yes I personally noticed these changes on my webmasters forums, before forum was improving in terms of Alexa Ranking, whereas, over the past few weeks, it is continuously loosing Alexa Ranking (may be the fact they have improved it)
