When you consider to buy a laptop from Apple, one of the biggest doubt that you would be in, is to whether buy a simple MacBook or a MacBook Pro. Though most of you know that MacBook Pro is the better version of the traditional MacBook. You still might be lacking the knowledge of where the MacBook Pro is a step ahead of the latter.
Here are a few comparison points and distinct features where am comparing a MacBook and MacBook Pro.
- External Differences
- Design and body – MacBook is a white body with separate parts, and the MacBook pro is a unibody case which is specially designed. The MacBook Pro is totally redesigned form of the MacBook and the unibody enclosure is the newer way of macs are made. The MacBook is made from Polycarbonate, and MacBook Pro from Aluminium coat.
- Keyboard – The keyboard in the MacBook is a normal one with no light support, but in MacBook Pro, the keyboard has a backlight, and the amazing feature of the Pro is that the light sensor brightens or dims depending on the surrounding brightness.
- Notebook Weight – When comparing the MacBook 13inch with MacBook Pro 13inch, the MacBook Pro is lighter and weighs 4.5 pounds (2.04 kg) when compared to 5.0 pounds (2.27 kg) MacBook.
- Trackpad – The trackpad in MacBook is a scrolling one, and the trackpad in MacBook Pro is just more than that. It’s a multitouch trackpad.
- Screen and Resolution – The resolution in both depends on the screen size but the difference lies in the appearance of the screen. The MacBook has got a glossy display, and the MacBook Pro has got glossy/matte widescreen display which does not allow background reflections to fall on the screen when viewing from the side.
- Side view – The left side in macs have most of the output connection slots and MacBook has a miniDVI port, but all the MacBook Pro have miniDisplay ports. Also the MacBook Pro has the SD card slot which a normal MacBook lacks. The MacBook has a FireWire 400 port while the MacBook Pro has got FireWire 800 port.
Internal Differences
- Processors – Mac Book has 1.83 GHz and 2.0 GHz core duo processors while the Mac Book Pro includes 2.0 GHz and 2.16 GHz core duo processors.
- Video card – The video display ability in the Mac book relies on the main RAM of the mac and so eats up memory when video is being displayed, but in a MacBook Pro, there is a separate Video card which does not involve eating up the memory from the main RAM.
- Battery Life – The MacBook is capable to last for a maximum of 5 hours, but the MacBook Pro are bound to have life up to 7 hours and the 17inch MacBook Pro has a battery life of 8 hours. One of the classic features seen in the Pro series.
- RAM and Hard Drive – The normal Mac book can have a maximum of 160 GB hard drive and 2 GB RAM, but the Mac book Pro can have up to 500 GB of hard drive(which of course depends on the model) and up to 4 GB of RAM.
These all were the basic differences between the Apple Mac book and the Apple Mac Book Pro laptops, which can help you decide which to buy when you are to consider a few external and internal features.

SO many typos. For instance, it’s not “Macbook” or “macbook”, whenever the word it used, it’s ALWAYS “MacBook”. People seem to forget that it’s a MAC and a noteBOOK. When used as a general, “notebook” is fine. But really, when addressing the “MacBook” or “MacBook Pro”, the B is always capitalized. One more thing, and I think this editor only did it once, they got the capitalization correct, yet they failed to make it one word. Really? It’s not “Mac Book”, I stress that it’s ONE word, “MacBook”.

Does it really matter? Dont the readers clearly understand that overall this topic is around the Apple Notebook. Anyway you have posted a nice suggestion which will be taken in count and from now we will make sure its written as ‘MacBook’

No, it’s not imperative, but otherwise it looks rather unprofessional and quite sloppy. Now that I read my previous post, I see how childish I was~
Thank you for taking the suggestion into consideration, and I’m impeccably apologetic for just how 10-year-old-fanboi I acted.

Well, you don’t get out much, do you? I’ll correct the diction of whoever I please, isn’t that one of the principal rights of the interwebs? Yes, this blog certainly works hard to give this information to the general public alongside, oh, what… three or four dozen other more credible and certainly more widely known blogs?
Ah, regardless, I find it all the more entertaining that you wasted your time replying to me. Which, in and of itself, I do have the free time to bother replying to you. Keep smiling, jackass #2.

Wow, so many differences! I always knew the MacBooks were sort of handicapped siblings of the MBP, but never thought they would be SO handicapped. And still, Apple charges something like 800 bucks for them. :[
MBPs are a beauty. :]

A good analysis and comparison done, but I think it needs to be redone as I recently saw a specification of Macbook in which many features which you have shown in Macbook pro are being included in Macbook like 7 hr. battery life, multitouch trackpad, a dedicated videocard. So I think the Apple must have added some more features or upgraded some in new Macbook pro to differenciate it with Macbook.
