Fron the past year there has been a huge rise in the sale of the Dual SIM Mobile phones in India which is randing in around 1,00,000 Dual-sim handsets sold every month but now there is a stop on this and you cannot even guess the reason for this. Somasundaram Ramkumar who is a Madurai resident holds a patent for ‘Phones with Plurality of SIM Cards’ which means that whenever someone sells a handset with Dual-SIM facility, they need to pay RamKumar a royalty of Rs35 and this Patent is valid for 5 long years. This Patent can help him become quick rich because the popularity of these handsets is increasing and all the importers and manufacturers have to pay Rs35 before they sell the handset to the consumers.
This Notice is active for all the major manufacturers like Samsung, LG, MIRC Electronics, Spice Mobile & Fly Mobile , out of which Fly is going to be the biggest sufferer as they have launched many handsets with Dual-Sim capability and since in many international countries you cannot run your country based SIM everywhere so there is always a need for alternative number and these mobile phones can be very helpful. Seems like Ramkumar can become a rich guy if you calculate the Royalty fees he may earn on every handset.

Well nice article but is this patent only valid in india or all over the world if it then tell me i will take patent to three sim and four sim mobile before some one takes patent for it
Abraham says
@Balaji, balaji, see the matter here is, that this guy S.Ramkumar can get the royalty only from the sales of dual sims in India only. he cannot avail it offshore. so sales outside India is not affected. or this guy would have been filthy rich by now. the next problem is that the patent he has acquired is for phones with plurality of sim cards. So be it a dual sim mobile or quadra sim mobile, if you are using his technology then you will have to pay him for that. if you want a new patent then you have got to find a new technology fo the multi sim mobiles.

i really want to know about the longgivity of the phones.
Parthiban says
What does this mean?? Ramkumar had developed technology and sold it to others?? How does this patent registration works??

As per my knowledge , the mobiles without IMEI numbers will not function starting from 2010 , as TRAI made it mandatory for IMEI numbers in mobile
This can be one possible reason

I am using one of these, B700 a make by Fly. I am not sure if it is still available in the market or not, but the technology works perfectly. My requirement is fulfilled to use a Dual SIM where I should be able to get connected to both the calls(calls from two SIMs) at the same time, except that the interface is very poor and not so impressive like any Samsung or Philips or any such popular brands. I came to know that Philips X700 is the most rated Dual SIM phone and unfortunately it is not available in India.. Guys, if any one finds a store for this please let us know the details..

I was expecting details about problems faced by the users of the dual-sim phones but it is related to the companies. So, this article is not useful (for me at-least).
If S. Ramkumar has patented for multi-sim phones then there is nothing wrong, he is making money by using his brain and without any corruption. Patent & Royalty is everywhere. The best example is of MP3 music format. MP3 is patented and any MP3 music publisher has to pay royalty for it to the owner of MP3 patent and still it the most widely used music format.
