I don't need to clean up my desktop because I refuse to allow desktop litter in the first place. The only icons I have are My Computer and Network Places and if some rude program dumps an icon on the desktop without asking me, I remove the icon at the first opportunity.

The first hard drive I ever had (on a 4.77MHz XT clone, those were the days) was a 32 meg RLL jobbie, and I learned very early on never to use a hard drive for dead storage. Even though I've got bazillions of gigabytes of hard drive space now, I still refuse to use a hard drive for dead storage. Anything that I want to keep but don't actively need gets backed up to a CD or DVD and deleted from the hard drive. I also do backups of my writing, Quicken, etc. onto flash drives.

I also want to put in an endorsement of Ccleaner, which does an outstanding job of getting rid of junk. I run that every so often and then follow it up with Norton Speed Disk, which is the best defrag utility I've yet seen. Reply
