I sent them a letter in the mail and they 'couldn't figure out who I was' to cancel. How many other users had my email address anyway? If you forcefully stop paying them, that should do it. At the time, I was closing the account from which they drew the payments. That pretty much took care of it, as far as I can tell. If you don't want to close the account, get the bank to stop the payments. It might cost a little - it sure won't cost the same as perpetually paying AOL forever and ever... Good Luck!
