Whenever you visit any website or a blog you will find a small square icon displayed on your browser’s address bar which would generally make you remind the website. These are available in 3 different sizes ie 16×16, 32×32 and 64×64 though the smallest one is generally used. Its not a compulsary stuff for your website but it does help in branding and when people bookmark your website on their browser, the favicon can give them a different look.
For example, if you see the above Image you will find that all the different websites bookmarked have a different favicon and you can even find the Google one which can easily make you differentiate between all the bookmarked link. This is one of the main advantage of using a favicon.
In order to get started, i will list out a series of tools which can help you build your favicon online by converting your large images. This means that you can design a excellent Image which you would like to display and then use the following tools and get the job done.
- Dagon Design Tool – This is a excellent free tool which would ask you to upload an Image from your computer in JPG, PNG, or GIF format and upto a size of 100kb which would be converted to the standard 16×16 size and would be saved as favicon.ico file name which is the extension for these kind of images. Generally its recommended to upload a Image which is of square format because the same would be cropped into a smaller square. I have added a screenshot below which shows you a sample of few favicons generated using this tool.
- Dynamic Drive – The FavIcon Generator by Dynamic Drive is another neat online application which allows you to generate a favorites icon from gif, jpg, png, and bmp files with upto a size of 150kb. You also get a code at the end of the conversion which can be used to install the favicon on your blog.
- Faviconr – Another nice and easy tool which asks you to upload any Image file upto 150kb and would generate the Favicon for you. Looks pretty simple and ad free website completing your job.
- Favikon – The best among all the online tools listed here is this one because you can upload images upto 5MB from multiple formats. You can directly view the live photo there and then move the scroller and select which area of the image you would like to be displayed as a favicon rather than the complete image and then capture the selected area and preview it. This way you have better chances and more perfect stuff.
Once you complete the conversion process and download the favicon file you need to upload it to your hosting accounts root folder ie www.amitbhawani.com/favicon.ico and then within your HEAD tag of your theme files, add the following code in order to activate it.
<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="/favicon.ico">
