One Laptop Per Child 100$ XO Laptops Priced at 200$

The One Laptop Per Child mission started by laptopfoundation is now in the completion stage with the planned 100$ laptops to be launched from November 12th 2007 onwards.

One Laptop Per Child ProjectWhat is this One Laptop Per Child Mission (OLPC)?
Our mission is to provide a means for learning, self-expression and exploration to the nearly two billion children of the developing world with little or no access to education. While children are by nature eager for knowledge, many countries have insufficient resources to devote to education—sometimes less than $20 a year per child. Imagine the potential that could be unlocked by giving every child in the world the tools they need to learn, no matter who they are, no matter where they live, no matter how little they may have.

In the beginning of this project founder of MIT Professor Nicholas Negroponte quoted that the laptop pricing would be around 100$ each but seems it was just a dream and now the pricing has been adjusted to 200$ a peice, though the approximated cost is coming around 188$ right now.

These green laptops are scheduled to get into production from november 2007 in a chinese factory which is far behind the schedule and the quantities are always very less than previously estimated by Nicholas Negroponte with the laptops software estimated to be completed by december. Microsoft is also trying to work out a way to integrate windows xp on these laptops and another patent worthy feature of these laptops is that the display changes from color to black and white when its directly viewed in sun light with a extremely low power usage of just 2 watts compared to a typical laptop’s 30 to 40 watts.
