Note : Iam not referring to any single web directory owner.
Since many of you guys know directories are penalised by google and the main reason behind that is , they dont want directories to be just link directories and offer listings to any websites to help them gain page rank and better serps.
But the main question is what about the big directory owners who did these mistakes and are now in huge loss because of the heavy promotions? Small/New directory owners should accept that they were starting their directories just in hope big directory promoters would help them.
My personal suggestion would be that if you are running a health directory why not make it a health resource by adding high quality original health related information, and making the web directory a part of it. having those content blogs linked to feedburner and daily updation of information would help you in gaining Real visitors who will subscribe to your blogs and offer you with returning visitors.
Iam sure everyone of you guys have heard about Johnchow.com who was banned in google for targetting the keyword “Make Money Online” by getting backlinks from many others bloggers in the name of a contest in which he did suceed, but the typo domain Johncow.com is also making great results these days because he is offering same kind of resource and both of these guys are getting their visitors from the feeds subscribers who resularly visit their website to read the updates.
If the directory owners do plan out on something like this they can surely get real visitors who may click on the listed websites in the directory offering the listed website clients targetted visitors. Its never late to start off because there are many directories adopting something different, here are some good examples :
I hope all the well promoted directories do something on this issue rather than just waiting what may google do next. Also they should have a strict acceptance guidelines and accept quality websites only. Refunding the already listed bad / low quality websites and removing those bad listings. In short list only those websites which are helpful for real visitors and not for bots.

Having content and being useful is great, but if Google uses automated filters to penalize and you are unlucky of being catch in one all the content in the world will not help.
BTW looks like DMOZ also got caught on the filters.

I’d say, how about a blog for your directory.
Possibly with yourdirectory.com/blog subdirectory.
This could mean, extra and unique content that keeps the search engines happy, and the users too.
As well as non-penalized directory that keeps the webmasters happy

Nice article that should help to inspire webmasters not to give up. The only problem left is not knowing if/when/under what criteria google will remove penalties. I would immediately set about making some nice content if i knew google would remove the penalty but if not it would be a lot of work for peanuts. How many more times will we be struck down by the mystery and secrecy of google?

Even blogs selling txt links to boost pagerank also are penalised…
