What is a tablet notebook : Basically tablet pc referes to a device developed in 2001 by Microsoft as a pen enabled computer having special hardware components and having installed a licenced original Microsoft XP tablet PC edition operating system. It mainly indicates a laptop or more specifically slate shaped mobile laptop having a touchscreen which operates the computer using a stylus or a digital pen thus replacing mandatory need of keyboard and mouse as traditional input device. This makes the user more comfortable interaction with his/her PC.
Forms of tablet PC available :
- Slates:
Slate Tablet PC The most lightest available tablet notebooks are the slates. That is , as the name itself states, the notebook resembles sort of the primitive writing slates. Thus they do not have any dedicated keyboards. For text input to the computer the user uses stylus or the digital pen o the touchscreen. User can also add a keyboard if required by connecting it wirelessly or through the well known USB port. These tablet PC has small LCD screen which has touch sensors in it. These tablet PC has major application in field work where rugged feature like heat resistant etc. and compactness are more preferred needs.
- Covertibles:
Convertible Tablet PC These are the most available tablet PC but unlike Slates they have a base and a keyboard attached dedicated only for input purpose. They almost look like a laptop but are smaller than them and heavier than Slates. The base of convertibles, having the keypad is connected to the screen using a single joint which can rotate through 180 degrees and fold down on the keyboard. Though this is the most widely available tablet PC the joint is the physical point of weakness.
- Hybrids:
Hybrid Tablet PC HP The name was termed by the users of HP/Compaq TC 1000 and 1100 series. It has the combined specifications of slates as well as convertibles. It has a detachable keyboard but the screen can also rotate through 180 degrees and fold up on the keyboard.
Tablets v/s simple laptops
There are various advantages and limitations of tablet PC like:
It is replacing mouse and keyboard enabling it to use just 1 handedly while standing but the cost of them is very high. Non character information like diagrams can be recorded but speed of writing is slower than peek typing speed. They are light in weight but screen is under use constantly, screen damage risk is high.
All these are lovely. I have Acer laptop and i use it 10-15 hours a day.
Both r good at their own levels !!
