Following the excellent performance by Smitha Madhav and a Geeky Performance by Kannan Ramasubramania, we had on the Stage Prof. D Balasubramanian who is the Director at The L.V.Prasad Eye Hospital on the topic – ‘The Promise of Stem Cells’.

The Cell is the Fundamental Unit of Life. Cells make tissues make organs make the organism. How many Cells make an Organism. Whether the Bacterium or the Yeast, the number of Cells in the Organism is just 1, occasionally two(Hapliod and Dipliod). It is that single fertilized egg cell that differentiated to the 210 types of cells that make all our organs, limbs and body. # of Genes are between 25000-30000 and number of Proteins are above 1,00,000+. The Presentation was mainly on Stem Cells with a lot of useful information related towards biology and since iam a Geek this was quite a bouncer for me atleast. I was just impressed to see the Director of one of the most well known hospitals in India which gets patients who have eye related issues.
Dr. D.Balasubramanium is currently working as a director at The L.V.Prasad Eye Hospital, Hyderabad. He has worked as the Director of CCMB, and has been a Professor & Dean at The University of Hyderabad. His research interests include Molecular and Cellular Approaches to Understand and Treat Diseases of the Eye. He has published more than 145 papers and authored three books. He was awarded the “Padma Shri” – a national honor by the President of India in 2002. He was also awarded The “Chevalier de l’Ordre National de Merite” – a national honor by the President of France in 2002 and has received several other awards.
