How to Trace An Email – Find Senders Info
If you have received some email from a unknown person and you need to find out the sender information it would be hard because you wont find anything more than the senders email directly unless you look into the emails in detail to find out detailed information on the sender. People keep asking if they could track down the IP of the email sender or the
location from which the sender has sent a email to them. Its not really a hard task to find this stuff but it all works on assumptions and no correct stuff can be found out easily. Dont expect that you can find the senders home address and you can directly login to his webcam and have access to this PC like the ones you watch in Hollywood Movies.
Anyway back to the topic whenever you receive any email, it would have a originating location in the header of the email address. Most email companies would hide the header in the top of the email and you would just find the senders email address with the time you had recieved the email in your inbox. If you need to find more information on the sender then you need to move over a few clicks more.
Next when you click on the ‘Show Details’ link in the header section of your email, you will find more details of the sender like – From , To, Date, Subject & Mailed by Server. Though these kind of details cannot be helpful to you because you should be looking for more advanced details. Next click on the ‘Drop Down’ arrow in the header which will show you a option ‘Show Original’ which should reveal a lot of information about the sender of the email.
The Original information will show up in a new window in the form of a HTML page with Garbled text , where in the the top section is the most important part. You will find the detailed information in this point , with a IP address of the sender. Then start finding reverse IP tools to know the whois of the IP from which the email was sent to you. You can also use domaintools.com for checking out the whois of a IP address which also gives you the contact email of the IP owner in case if its a ISP. Just contact them with the IP address and they can help you in finding out the real address. This is the same process you should try for Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Live email, Hotmail, Aol etc
