Criminology Courses in India
The field of study known as criminology involves the studying of crime as a phenomenon on an individual as well as a social level. Crimes are conducted in various forms, for various reasons and have various consequences. Criminology involves studying all these aspects associated with crime in general.
The subject also involves the study of the manner in which governmental authorities seek to regulate crime in the society. The main source from which the study of criminology derives its theory is sociology, psychology and law.
Crime rate is on the increase and the nature of these crimes is also getting more complex. Hence the study of criminology has become an important part of our social structure. Changes in the methods and modes of crime investigation have paved the way for advanced study to take place. Consequently the field of criminology offers immense opportunities for growth.
Studying criminology in India
India has developed its education sector to match some of the best countries in the world. There are various institutes in India offering the study of criminology at different levels. There are undergraduate and post graduate programs being offered in the specific field of study by various institutes.
To be eligible to a Bachelors degree in criminology the candidate must have passed his higher secondary schooling in Arts or Science. The eligibility criterion for a Masters program is a graduate degree in either science or arts.

What will you be studying?
Just like every field of study has its major areas of interests so does criminology. Causes of crime and methods of preventing crime are the two most important aspects of the study of criminology. You will also be studying crime statistics along with criminal behavior.
Penology and the evaluation of criminal justice agencies is also part of the course. Students will also be required to develop an understanding of the Sociology of Law. Lastly criminal careers and desistance also forms part of the study of criminology.

With the crime rate increasing at good speed the relevance of the study of criminology in our times cannot be questioned. Jobs of counseling, rehabilitation of criminals are also open to the qualified criminologists.
The job prospectus for people well versed in the field of criminology is even brighter outside of India. A criminologist can be hired in foreign police departments as well as state medical examiners. Other typical jobs include Law reform researcher, Regional crime prevention coordinator, Consumer advocate and Environment protection analyst.


hii..i am an home science student which includes subjects like human development(HD),psychology,,textiles,management,,biochemistry.so can i TAKE HD in my tybsc level.and for masters can i opt for criminology or criminal pyschology..we dont have pyschology in our tybsc level…

I am a so called “criminologist” of India with my specialization in psychoneuroendocrinology and criminal behaviour…you can call it criminal psychology in simple words. I have completed my masters from LNJN NICFS, Delhi and m struggling hard to keep myselves in the same field…if you have got so many vacancies for me…kindly give me one job in a central prison or a lecturer in criminology at any of these universities…the fact is that the future of criminology in India is still dark and I would like if you post my comment openly over here…

Hi supriya.. i think i am in the same boat i have my criminal justice degree from the united states although i am an indian citizen. Due to my status as a student here i cannot get a job in the US and indian does not offer jobs for criminal justice major. I have been job hunting for the last two years and no luck so far. If you come across something please email me and let me know. I think you are still in a better boat since u did not spend 40000US dollars getting this degree

I agree with Terry and Supriya, I am myself a criminology grad and struggling for a job, i guess this article is not well researched and is unrealistically optimistic…its sad that criminology is not well recognised in our country and most of the jobs that may fall into this profession requires one to appear for civil services

u cud undrstand tht here in india criminology is not hanging strong, so it wud b ezy to say tht, if u intnd to opt for it, thn might prob thnk of a bakup,
