Online schools used to be fodder for jokes, but today the climate has changed quite a bit and a forum that was once considered unprofessional is now dominated by high quality educational institutions, some of which have well-respected brick and mortar counterparts. For many working professionals, online courses can be a great way to get ahead in a career, make the move to a higher position and perhaps even secure a better salary.

You’ll be forced to interact in online communities, manage your coursework, and use some of the latest and greatest technologies to learn—something that can help you big time on the job.
• You can get extra certifications. For most people, getting extra certifications can be a big asset to a resume or to salary negotiations. Plus, it will help you to know more about what you do and to feel more authoritative and comfortable doing it.

Perhaps one of the biggest assets of online education programs is that since they are often asynchronous they allow you to gain additional experience at work while earning the degree or certification you want. While it’s a lot of work to balance both, you’ll reap the benefits of the situation in the end.
• Gaining education shows a commitment to improvement. Employers often take it to heart when employees seek out more training and education. It takes a person who is serious about their field and about getting ahead to invest more time and money into education, so it can be a great thing to highlight at a job interview.
• You’ll have a more impressive resume. It never hurts to have some extra qualifications and degrees on your resume. Going to classes online can be an easier way to balance your work and personal life with improving your education and giving yourself more career power.
