It is the marine engineer that is captain of the engine room in a ship. Basically they are responsible for the proper functioning of all the electric components of a ship such as steam engines, electric motors and propulsive engines etc.

Developing new designs for engines and other components that are used in various sailing vessels is also the job of a marine engineer. They are also responsible for checking the efficiency of the already existing components.

One of the most interesting things about marine engineering is that people working in this field get to experiment with all kinds of new technologies such as hydrodynamics, superconductivity and fuel cells in order to upgrade the water vessels. All these developments offer plenty of job opportunities for young people willing to take up marine engineering as a professional career path.

Studying marine engineering in India

There are a number of different courses on marine engineering being offered by various institutes in India. Generally the entrance exams are conducted between April and June. The courses are offered at different levels and have different prerequisites.

You can opt for a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering if you have completed twelve years of schooling with chemistry, physics, english and mathematics. After completion of your Bachelors degree you can head on for your masters and then eventually you can do a Ph.D in the field.

Moving forward as a marine engineer

The area of operation of a marine engineer expands over the land as well as the sea. The fact that new technology is increasingly being introduced into the field and there is extensive research and development going on has increased career opportunities for youngsters willing to take up the field of study as a career.

Jobs in this field are extremely lucrative. This is because it is a tough academic choice that requires hard work and intelligence. You may very well be starting off with over 40000 once you graduate. Jobs on oil tankers are even higher paid.

Marine engineer have a number of job opportunities on shore as well. Ports require the services of trained marine engineers and so does the shipping industry in general. Then you have a number of openings in the government sector of Directorate General of Shipping. You can also continue in the field of teaching marine engineering in an institute.

Many international companies are willing to recruit fresh graduates in the field. They offer them training along with generous compensations that makes it a great career line. There are plenty of job opportunities in France and the U.K as well.
