Merchant Navy Courses
The merchant navy is different from the military navy in respect of the services that it offers. Whereas a military navy offers national defense services the function of the merchant navy is to offer commercial services. Generally there are three kinds of fleets in a merchant navy.
1. Cargo carriers
2. Oil tankers and other special vehicles
3. Passenger liners.
Similarly area of operation for a merchant navy officer spreads over three main areas.
1. The captain.
2. Second officer
3. Third officer and other posts that make up the deck workforce
The service department of the merchant navy fleets focus on ongoing operations in the kitchen and related services whereas the engine room is the domain for marine engineers. Working for the merchant navy offers individuals the opportunity to travel to distant lands and interact with people of different cultures. The job is ideal for those with an adventurous spirit and an interest in traveling.
As far as the monetary compensations are concerned the merchant navy jobs are extremely lucrative provided you are willing to stay at away from your family for long periods of time. In recent years the number of people applying to the merchant navy has increased which is the reason why different institutes have started to offer training courses regarding the field in India.
Applying for Merchant Navy courses in India
The Merchant Navy courses admission tests are scheduled through IT-JEE. The selected individuals are then enrolled into two branches of the merchant navy namely navigational sciences and marine engineering. Medical fitness is a common criterion for applying in merchant navy courses as well seeking a career in the field.
Students can start off with their B.E in marine engineering which is a four year program. The candidate must have completed 12 years of schooling in order to apply for the course. B.S.C nautical science is a three year program to which students can apply after completed their higher secondary education. The students must have taken science subjects with English and mathematics as their main subjects. Graduates in the courses can then pursue their masters in the same field.
Climbing up to success as a merchant navy officer
On completion of the above mentioned courses one is recruited as a deck cadet or junior engineer according to their qualifications. The junior officer is then supposed to undertake an exam prepared by Directorate General of Shipping after which he is granted promotion.
There are plenty of opportunities for individuals that have completed merchant navy courses in India. Particularly they can join the merchant navy as navigational officers of different levels such as the captain, first mate, second mate and third mates respectively.
If your field of specialization is concerned with engineering then you will be able to find place in the engine room. There are different levels in the jobs for engineers as well. A third department is the service department that will require you to serve the crew as well as the passengers on board.
The merchant navy is an integral part of international trade. Individuals trained under merchant navy courses can find jobs in international shipping companies in the different posts that have been mentioned above.
