Midlife Career Changes – Questions You Must Ask Yourself

Career ChangesIt’s not the easiest of decisions to make even when you’re 20 and just starting out on a career, so if you’re nearing 40 and have crossed half your adult life, how do you justify choosing a new career? Career changes are not uncommon and many people have done it successfully irrespective of their age, but each of us is different. So if you’re contemplating it too and if you’re not really sure of your decision, here are a few questions you can ask yourself to ensure that you’re doing the right thing:

  • Are you making drastic changes on a whim? If you’ve made the decision based on someone else’s life or if you’re changing careers on a whim, then you need to rethink your decision. A career change is not easy, especially if you’re not as healthy as you used to be and if you have to relearn or learn skills that you don’t have. So before you quit your job on a whim, take stock of the pros and cons of the change and make the decision accordingly.
  • Why you want the change? Is it something that you must do or are you being tempted by offers of large sums of money for doing relatively nothing? Some people quit their regular jobs because they think it’s easier to earn more money working online or by working the stock market. They don’t realize the risks that exist when they fail to consider why they want the change. If it is just for more money, don’t do it, especially if the risk factor is high. Better a known devil than an unknown entity that looks like a friend.
  • What you want to do? If you know exactly what you want to do when you decide on a career change, perhaps you stand a chance of success. But if you just go around saying that you need a change without knowing what exactly you want to change to, you’re only going to end up jumping from one option to the other without any sense of permanency.
  • Are you up to the challenge? A career change involves learning new skills, picking up new abilities, and changing the way you’ve been doing everything so far. And when you’re nearing or above 40, your health is not what it was when you were 20. So make sure that your health is up to the challenges of the new job and if your age is acceptable in your new profession. The mind may be willing, but if the flesh is weak, there’s no use of changing careers.
