Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun

 

The wildlife institute of India was established in 1982. Its main objective was to government and non-government personnel carry out research and give advice on matters regarding the conservation of wildlife resources. It was given full autonomy in 1986. Over the years the institute has grown and expanded its academic and training programs. Both Master of Science and PhD level courses are available at the institute. There are also wildlife studies based short courses on offer.

There are eight academic departments namely: Animal Ecology and Consevation Biology, Ecodevelopment Planning and Participatory Management, Endangered Species Management, Habitat Ecology, Landscape Level Planning and Management, PA Network Wildlife Management and Conservation Education, Population Management Capture and rehabilitation as well as Wildlife Health. Each of these departments has highly qualified instructors.

The institute has 6 cells which help in learning. One of the cells is the Computer and GIS Cell. The institute also has its own internet and mail services. It also boasts state of the art GIS and Remote Sensing facilities. Another cell is the Audio Visual Unit. This helps in developing internal learning resources that are used for teaching, training, research and extension activities. Another important cell is the Environmental Impact Assessment Cell. Others are the Captive Breeding and Zoo Management Cell, wildlife forensic cell and the wildlife policy research cell. All these cells are geared towards the conservation and management of wildlife.

Among the facilities available at the wildlife Institute of India is a modern library that is equipped with relevant and up to dated resources. There are 22 services offered at the library with the help of of trained and experienced staff members. The library has over 8,000 books and more than 300 journals available for its 300 users. There are a number of fully equipped laboratories used for teaching and research, Forensics as well as veterinary services. Plans are underway in the establishment of a molecular biology and genetics laboratory. Another important facility at the institute is a herbarium which is used to identify plant specimen. The herbarium houses over 15,000 specimens ready for identification.

In addition, the Wildlife Institute of India also has a detailed National Wildlife database of all the national parks, sanctuaries and reserves in India. It is also important to note that the institution is an Environmental Information System Centre in India. The institute offers excellent placement opportunities for all its learners.
