What is the difference between a.b.com and the b.com/a

Sub Domain is generally treated as a completely new domain name in terms of SEO and if heavily interlinked with the main domain ie b.com then it can rank as a part of b.com, on the other hand sub folder is treated as a part of the main site instantly and when interlinked they get the seo effects instantly. If you are looking to start a new section its recommended to go for a sub folder like b.com/a

...............................
How to create a.b.com? [Sub Domains]

Here is a guide on creating subdomain in shared hosting
