What is canonization? Can anybody explain how this is important in SEO?

A Single page can be accessed with multiple URL which means that the search engines try to assign rankings to all these pages and overall everything along with Pagerank gets distributed. You need to avoid these!
Example :

http://www.example.com
http://www.example.com/index.php

http://example.com
