I saw many peoples using xyz.com/blog, xyz.com/money. My question is, do we need to install wordpress for every sub-directories. also,

Yes, you have to add wordpress for sub blogs also. You can use different themes. But it looks bad. So, it is always better to use same Main theme.

You can go for multiple blogs but installing wordpress again and again on all these different sub folders or else you can go for Wordpress Mu which works like 1 main blog and sub blogs attached to it.
