Father’s Day Festival
Father’s Day is celebrated to honor fathers in almost all independent nations. The day is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month of June and it complements the celebration of mother’s day which is for honoring of motherhood. The day according to English Punctuation is spelled as Fathers’ Day which is correct according to our knowledge as “a day dedicated to fathers ”, but nowadays the most popular spelling used for the day is Father’s Day.
Historical Antecedents
Father’s Day celebration started quite recently compared to mother’s day. It first originated near about early 20th century to honor fatherhood and respect to forefathers. There is no fixed international date for it and the day is celebrated on variety of days across the world. It is believed that Sonora Dode was the originator of the day and it was observed for the first time on June 19, 1910. On this day Sonora Dode organized a tribute for her father and was the first person to think of make a universally accepted official celebration.
Celebration and commercialization
In 1930s the Associated Men’s wear retailers formed a committee in New York known as National Council of the promotion of Father’s Day which included several other trade groups too. The council has the aim of making the day more and more acceptable in the minds of common people and managing the day in a more systematic but commercial way to boost sales on the day. Dode, on the contrary to Anna Jarvis who opposed the commercialization of Mother’s Day, gave full support to Father’s Day commercialization. People buy various gifts and greeting card are also sold for fathers on this day.
