South Australia is an Australian state which lies in the southern central region of the country. In size, it is the fourth largest state amongst the six states and two territories and in term of population, it is the fifth largest.
The state is home to less than 10% of the nation’s population. The state capital is the city of Adelaide where the majority of the state’s population resides. The economy is dominated by agriculture, mining, manufacturing and finance.
Jobs in the Manufacturing Industry
This industry contributes 15% to the GDP of the state. This makes it an important industry especially since it plays a large role in exports. There are a number of sectors found in this industry. The automotive industry is the leading industry, whilst machinery and equipment follow as well as processed food and beverages and metal products. The main producer of alkali in Australia is a soda ash plant proximate to Port Adelaide. A multimetal smelter in the league of the largest in the world produces refined lead and zinc and contributes significantly to the world output. Other sectors include pharmaceutical, electronic, component manufacturing and defense technology. Jobs available in the various sectors include: mechanical engineers, fitters, food scientists, researchers, smelters, management, wastewater management, environmentalists.
Jobs in the Agricultural Industry
The sectors in the industry range from crop production to livestock production to viticulture. The state grows about 15% of Australia’s wheat for export. Barley is also grown and a quarter of the national output is produced by the state.
Livestock production is extensive ranging from cattle rearing to pig and poultry production to sheep rearing. Ten percent of the sheep in Australia are reared in South Australia whilst dairy cattle are about half of that percentage.
Grapes and orchard fruit are intensively grown. In fact 40% of the total vineyard area is concentrated in the South Australian state. The nation’s prime consortium of managed softwood plantations is found to the south east of the state. The most important wood processing industries are concentrated in the state.
