April 13, 2010 by Amit Bhawani

Whenever i plug-in my External Hard Disk Drive into my Laptop i get a error which says ‘USB Device Not Recognized’ and this bugs me a lot because i need to access some important data on my computer and this error is not being fixed even if i restart the Laptop multiple times. Please help me out with this. Question by Swathi.

USB Device Not Recognized

This is a problem which can occur on your computer because of multiple reasons like Unrecognized Drive, Missing Computer Drivers, Incorrect driver versions of USB, No support for USB 2.0 or USB 3.0, Attached External Hubs, Hardware Malfunction. The best part solution for this Device Not Recognized is that you need to visit the Device Manager of your computer.

Go to Computer > Control Panel > System > Device Manager , which is where you will get a list of all the recognized and Unrecognized Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

Unknown Usb Device Error

Next right click on the USB Port which shows you a error and click on ‘Update Driver Software‘ which will show you a new window with options to ‘Automatically Search for Updated Driver Software‘ or else ‘Browse My Computer for Driver Software’. If you have a USB Drivers CD offered with the device you can select the second option if not select the Automatic Update option.

Update USB Driver Software

The above option will make Windows download the latest drivers for the USB Port and the device and make sure that the problem is fixed. If this solution does not help you need to Power Off the USB Device, Disconnect it and then restart your computer. Once its rebooted, again reconnect the device and this time the system would recognize it.

If this does not help then its time you should get the device checked for any issues or else upgrade your computer’s USB Ports with the latest hardware in the market.
