As most of you Indian Broadband Internet users are familier with BSNL Broadband has introduced EVDO which is a Data Card based broadband connection for laptop users in India. This service is going to be introduced in around 700+ Cities in India with limited launch already done. Here are some details about this service.
What is EVDO :
This word stands for Evolution-Data or Evolution-Data Optimized is a internet service standard for wireless internet connections with speeds ranging upto 2.4Mbps.
Cost of Data Card :
The Data Card if purchase would cost you 3500Rs one time charges and you wont need to make any monthly rentals towards the dard card. If you are not looking for making any initial payments you can buy this data card on rental basis which would cost you 200Rs/month.
Bsnl Evdo Data Card Tariff :
The Tariff of this service is around 550Rs/month for speeds upto 2.4Mbps in most cities in India. Though there are reports that the pricing differs based on cities and starts at 400Rs/month to 550Rs/month.

Amit is this the full list of cities, because i don’t Mumbai, delhi or mumbai on the list, If this is the list I should say BSNL has got everything wrong by starting this service in smaller cities, where people or still just starting to know about the DATAONE services.This should have started the similar as they started DataOne with just a few subscribers and then slowly improving the capacity.
In other the EVDO modem is available at 2100/-. When the karnataka state telephone dept is going to implement this rate so that subscriber can get the EVDO modem at 2100/- instead of 3500/-. Yes I am talking about the 2.4 MBps EVDO modem only.

Mumbai & Delhi are under MTNL.Being a state owned TELCO, BSNl can not provide services to these cities.
there is no bsnl in mumbai and delhi there is only mtnl in that cities

i am using BSNL EVDO in pune, so its depend on the area in which they provide a evdo network.if network is good so you may get approximetly 1.8 mbps.

It is all fake. No good speed. I brought BSNL Evdo on rental basis. Firstly they charge hefty amount for rental basis. 500 activation charges, 1000 security deposit, 200 – rent of card and 999 or 1000 is the rent for unlimited internet surfing. Moreover you will pity on speed. A normal local ISP of 256KBPS will fetch you more speed than BSNL EVDO **2MBPS** card. Please think twice before opting for EVDO.

i am also use bsnl evdo (650/manth) in kolkata baghajatin area.but the srvice is very poor.max speed upto 567 kbps after use 1 month. download speed in average 14-35 kbps.

I am from Kollam…Kerala………..I am using EVDO. The average is between 250kbs to 1mbs in City or town limit, but if we are outside city limit or rural areas say 20 or 30 km away the speed will be 20kbs upto 60kbs.. In some areas you may or may not be able to get connection..

I guess that is correct speed they are providing!
Generally all browsers, softwares shows speed in bytes and not in bites.
153 / 8 = ~19.12500 meaning you are getting the same speed what they had promised!

To answer all your questions:
I’m using the BSNL EVDO 1x data card and i’m satisfied with it. They theoritical speed limit is 2.4Mbps but the max i have got is close to 2 Mbps in the midnight when the data traffic is less.
It is available in all Metro cities and major cities. Please check with BSNL to know if your city is supported (since they are adding city by city every now and then). Beyond the city limits the speed comes down to as low as 25kbps. During peak hours the average speed is 400kbps which is pretty good even for voice chatting. But video conferencing and watching live streaming videos would require more than 900Kbps download speed. I’ve tried all the wireless usb broadband data card. So far BSNL is the best in all Metros, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

At guwahati, i got the bsnl data card yesterday, in total i paid Rs4665/- for the cost of datacard + activation charges.
Installation was a breeze, their is a CD Rom provided along with the pack. The card is little bulky, bulkier than Tata Indicom usb card. Currently their is only one plan available, that is Rs550/- for unlimited usage. The speed is terrific, around 300kbps surfing speed and surprisingly the download speed is more around 400kbps and i even tried torrents on it, to my surprise it still gave me almost the same download speed. Hope it remains like that, as users increase, their is a tendency to oversell the bandwidth as had the case been with Reliance and Tata, which is why it failed in major cities. But as far as i know, BSNL dont oversell, so it should remain like this, still their is lot of confusion regarding what are the roaming facilities, do they charge for roaming or is it free across India.

BSNL EVDO is also available in Siliguri. The tariff here is Rs 250/- for unlimited usage. Speed is lighting fast. It really goes upto 2 Mbps. i get a download speed of 400 to 500 kbps per second. In torrents, i get a speed of 450 to 480 kbps. i download a full movie in under 45 minutes in very good quality. price is 250/- per month for unlimited usage here.

BSNL Data card is actually based on CDMA technology. It is of two types- one is NIC card, which is giving 144kbps speed, and the 2nd one is EVDO, which is giving 2.4kbps (max). Yes this speed is possible. EVDO will also support CDMA 1x (144 kbps), so if you have taken the EVDO card, and roming in a city which is not having the EVDO facility, you will get at least CDMA 1x(up to 144 kbps). But BSNL EVDO is not supporting roaming till now. near future it will also be possible very soon. note that all cities of india dont have this EVDO network. For this the compony has to upgrade the network, and BSNL is upgrading the network very fast. Everyday, some cities are being added.
Definetely the EVDO card taken by one operator can be used for the other, but for this the programming inside the card has to be change by compony.
BSNL data card is cheaper than the other.
This EVDO is good but when we use it for voice confrence through any chat messanger, like Yhaoo, always its have problom with connecting or enabelling to voice chat in chat rooms or into voice confrencess.. pls do someting for slove this probloms..

Here in J&k, i got the EVDO at rs. 7000 last year in May. and now i doubt that it’s double the amount it should have been. i still have the bill receipt. the monthly charges are 250 and have to be paid 500 after two months but due to no bill being sent at my address, i always get confused when to pay and ahave to pay penalty for late bills. speed is ok. can anyone tell if 7000 is really the price of EVDO?

I am using BSNL EVDO for last three months but it is not giving the broadband speed any time.
i wanna know that if i purchase EVDO ,does that mean its my property…or do i need to return it to the BSNL once i get over to it..?? Because there is some security deposit of Rs 1000 that , they say , is refundable….and can i use the same EVDO card(brought from BSNL) with some other operator…??

This is a CRAP in NOIDA. Do not buy it. For last one month I have to run to BSNL offices all around Noida for 10 times. When I go to Sector 58 they say goto 19, when I go to 19 they say go to 37, when I go to 37 they say go to 62. Last one month has been a drama with EVDO. Average speed is 4-5 KBPS with 2 signal BARS. Downloading is 0. Who the hell is gonna keep this? Do I need to keep a servant to run around , and to call the offices all around. I think my GPRS connection with AIRCEL in Rs 98 is much better.
How can I use/connect BSNL data card EVDO CDMA 2000 1X through Ubuntu 9.04 Linux? I am a new user of linux. Can any one help me in this direction?
It is easy with Ubuntu 9.04. Same is also true for Fedora 11. I have done this with Aspire 4736Z. Just insert the BSNL data card ZTE EV-DO, go to the VPN configuration, Give name of connection (like BSNL CDMA), in Fedora 11) [IT WILL SELECT AUTOMATICALLY IN UBUNTU 9.04), type #777, give user name 165, password 165, select remember password & all user, then click configure option. Then it will ask for password for your linux (in ubuntu). Give password, mention session (single or for all). It is done.

BSNL Data card is actually based on CDMA technology. It is of two types- one is NIC card, and the 2nd one is EVDO, which is giving 2.4kbps (max). Yes this speed is possible. EVDO will also support CDMA 1x (144 kbps), so if you have taken the EVDO card, and roming in a city which is not having the EVDO facility, you will get at least CDMA 1x(up to 144 kbps). But BSNL EVDO is not supporting roaming till now. near future it will also be possible very soon. note that all cities of india dont have this EVDO network. For this the compony has to upgrade the network, and BSNL is upgrading the network very fast. Everyday, some cities are being added.
Definetely the EVDO card taken by one operator can be used for the other, but for this the programming inside the card has to be change by compony.

Worst Data Card ever ,, BSNL EVDO card does no good than a tata photon whiz modem. The speed is hopeless and lingers anywhere between 60 to 80 kbps and dwnld at 20 kbps. Better go for Photon+
I bought both of them from Guwahati and trust me BSNL is worthless ,its towers are worthless & its device is worthless. Its a complete waste of money. MTS, Reliance also do lots better

From yesterday, am observing the speeds are reducing drastically. Am just getting 800-1200 Kbps or 0.8-1.2 Mbps hardly.
