The rumors were no longer rumors when Samsung finally unveiled the information and the teaser site about the big entry into the tablet devices market by introducing an elder-brother of the recently hit Samsung Galaxy mobile phone, i.e. the Samsung Galaxy Tab. The official name is the Galaxy Tab.
The day everyone would be waiting for, is September 2nd, when Samsung would be officially announcing the launch of Samsung Galaxy Tab at IFA in Germany. As of now the specs talk about it being a 7-inch tablet device that would be coming in with Android OS, and initially only the UK markets would be able to sell it. Later the US and other markets would be concentrated upon.
Here are a few features of the Samsung Galaxy Tab as showed in the teaser site –
- Android 2.2 operating system (Android Froyo)
- 7-inch model (rumors are spread that a 10-inch one would be coming soon, but nothing officially said by Samsung yet)
- 3G network
- GPS functionality
- On-board memory of 16GB and expandable using the MicroSD, card slot provided for that.
- Wi-Fi b/g/n connectivity
- 4000 mAh battery
- Screen resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, a little lesser than that of the iPad
- Dual cameras – 3.2 megapixel on the rear side, and the VGA camera in the front (indicates the possibility for video conferencing)
- Pre-loaded Swype function (for easiest way of typing on the touchscreen)
The teaser shows some promising features that one would be requiring. The other features that were shown are the e-reading, navigation, support for flash, HD movie playing, video calling, full web browser. Most of the features resemble to those of the Samsung Galaxy S Mobile Phone. So, as the statement for iPad was being just a larger iPhone, the Galaxy Tab would be called a larger version of Galaxy S? I guess so. But when the Galaxy S is so promising, the Galaxy Tab would be too.
There are a few changes too seen in the screenshots shared in the video, one of them being the changes in Gmail app of Android where the summary of mails and the entire content of the mail are displayed side-by-side. The 2-column thing is not just for the gmail but also in the Messaging section. Google maps include the satellite view, being a pretty cool one. The Samsung app market shows you apps that would be helpful and available nearby your location. Too early to call this an iPad killer, but it still has the potential to be called one.

Galaxy Tab is superb, best of the best, but before getting one for myself, can anyone tell me if samsung going to follow up with the future apps development for Galaxy Tab or they will focus only on their other new devices and leave Galaxy Tab in the dark.
I like the flash support. In fact, playing flash games and content in the tablet devices was not possible before. With Android and it’s open source interface, the flash support is there. Would the same be available in the biggest competitor iPad? Not in the near future too.
I am happy with the 3.2-megapixel rear camera for imaging, and the front camera for video conferencing. One can’t just forget things like the camera and the SIM functionality while choosing for the best tablet device in the market.
