Best Music Management Programs

January 19, 2009 by Tony Stark

When someone says music management, the first programs that pop into my head are itunes and Windows Media Player. These programs sort your mp3 and mp4 files and both of them allow you to create playlists. They also have graphics that can play in the background while your music is playing. You can download both programs for free online. There are some drastic differences though, especially when it comes to popularity and content protection.

Windows Media Player – This program can be Window Media playerdownloaded from the web, or it comes preloaded on most Windows computers. Some features that set Windows Media Player apart from itunes are: more flexibility with file types (can play movie file types avi, mpeg, and mp4 while itunes will only play mp4) and it plays directly from cd’s and dvd’s in your cd and dvd drives. Drawbacks are: Windows Media Player isn’t as flashy as itunes. The main screen looks boring and the playlists are dull. Overall, Windows Media Player is more flexible than itunes, but less popular.

iTunesiTunes – This program can also be downloaded from the web for free. Unique features are: itunes marketplace runs in the same window that your songs and playlists are shown, so purchases are just a click away! When you rip a cd into your library with Windows Media Player, the file names are often different than the song names (“song #1” instead of “Under A Bridge”). iTunes will automatically search for the correct names and correctly label the artist, author, song, album, and genre. Limitations to itunes are: the program blocks movie files that are not mp4 and it blocks some audio file types too, songs and movies bought from the itunes marketplace are only transferable to ipods, iphones, and other itunes accounts, and cd’s and dvd’s can’t be directly played from the cd or dvd drive. itunes is definitely more popular than Windows Media Player as it is required to sync ipods and iphones to your computer.

In conclusion, itunes and Windows Media Player are the most popular music management programs. They both have their advantages and disadvantages, but that doesn’t seem to stop anyone from downloading them. Windows Media Player is more flexible, but itunes is more popular.
