How to Clean a CD or DVD Disk

June 15, 2009 by Jyoti Bhawani

Years back when CD’s were launched i was a bit crazy about them because they could store in 650Mb of data when compared to the Floppy Disks which used to handle only 1.44Mb of Data, isnt that a big difference when you get a newer technology which is has around 450 times more storage capacity and offers you with more security. Whenever i used to buy a new Floppy Disk it would not last more than 5 run times and if i tried to run it on some other PC with or without a different operating system then the Floppy Disk would go dead but when i started using the CD Disks i was amazed because the Sony Disks would have a neat box with a message saying that the disks would last as long as 100 years.

Now the long age of a CD or DVD drive is not a rule because it depends on many factors and the most important of all these is that you should store them in a nice location away from sun rays & dust and keep the disks clean. Here are few methods how you should clean a CD.

Clean CD DVD Disks

Cheap Home Cleansing Tutorial :
Get a Ripe Banana and peel it off. Then take the inside pulp and in a circular motion slowly rub it on the CD’s data side, ie on the side where the information is burned and not on the label side. After few circular wipings try to clean of all the pulp with the inner sides of the banana’s external peel which has some kind of wax which will fill into the small pores formed on your CD disks. Once this is done clean off everything using a very clean soft cloth to ensure you dont rub any dust again on the disks layers. Thats it you get a shining clean CD now with a natural cleaning solution because there were no harmful chemicals used in this tutorial.

Gentle Washing Detergant :
If you want to go for a real cleaning then first get some gentle washing detergents which would be used on dish washing detergent or else your daily tooth paste which also can raise some foam when you rub it on anything with water. Hence first run some drinking water over the CD and then start rubbing some soft detergent foam if possible in a circular motion all over the surface gently. You need to make sure that you are running only the foam and no pieces of the detergant are rubbed because they can form scratches all over the disk. When you are done with rubbing few times you should run some water again over the CD and then clean it with a soft and clean cloth. Keep it on a newspaper so that the water dries off but make sure that the label side is always kept on the lower position to avoid the burning section to always stay clean and dust free away from straches.

If you still worried about the data of your CD or DVD Disk then you can buy the CD Cleaners available at any malls or online portals like ebay and try to wipe off all the dust. Always make sure you take utmost care of your disks layers to make sure they are not kept under the direct sun rays because that can form small pimples on the CD which means its totally dead and also try to avoid scratches which are formed while careless handling. Once scratches are formed over your disks, its hard to recover the data from it.
