How to Fix Bios Blinking Error on Windows XP PC?

June 12, 2008 by Amit Bhawani

I know very little about the technical aspects of computers. From last evening, the screen of my PC is showing black whenever I am turning it on. Only a ‘-’ is blinking at the top left corner of my screen. Is this a problem related to my BIOS? If yes, then please tell me the way of fixing the BIOS of my PC. My PC is running on Windows XP Operating System.

Can You Tell Me the Reason Behind This Problem?
Did somebody else use your PC in your absence? Ask your mother. Somebody must have done something with your BIOS otherwise this problem can not occur. I will tell me the solution to this problem, but never let anybody else use your computer, in your absence, use a secret password and lock your PC. Tell your mother to stop others from using your computer in your absence.

There is a warning for you also, never try to experiment with your BIOS; this is a delicate and complicated part of the computer system. If something serious happens to your BIOS, you will not be able to repair it and your machine will be destroyed.

Discuss the Process of Repairing the BIOS of My Windows XP PC.
The BIOS runs the fundamental power on tests, searches and finds a bootable OS for your PC. It also acts as the control system of hardware in the operating system. The BIOS is usually stored in the firmware on your PC. You can also update your BIOS by flashing i.e. overwriting the current BIOS by a fresh version of the BIOS.

Now let us discuss about your specific problem. I don’t know whether you will be able to enter the BIOS configuring area. If you make this possible, you will find a setting there, called Reset to Factory Options. I think this will do the trick for you.

If this option fails, the only remedy left is physically replacing the chip in the motherboard on which your BIOS has been stored. Replace the chip with another chip containing working BIOS.

For this you will have to seek help from an expert. This will also cost you some money. So, be careful in dealing with the BIOS of your computer. Don’t play with the system without knowing the facts. Once your BIOS is destroyed your entire system will fail.
