I have a website which is targeting Indian Based Visitors but whenever i search for my website in Google.com and Google.co.in, i find that all the search result rankings are quite better in .com and not in google.co.in. I want Google to make my website rank better when someone from India searches my website and also if its possible to show my visitors that the site is from India. - Content : If you want your website to rank for a specific country, you should make sure that you have got a maximum content related to the same country. This is because many webmasters target of US based traffic with India targeted content which is why it fails. Its better to have a lot of content which is related to the website and also to the country as this helps in better rankings.
- Geographic Target : Google Webmaster Tools offers you with a option to set a geographic target for your website with options based on the Country. Under the Dashboard > Site Configuration > Settings, you will find the first option.
If your site targets users in a particular location, you can provide us with information that will help determine how your site appears in search results, and also improve our search results for geographic queries. You can only use this feature for sites with a neutral top-level domain, such as .com or .org. Country-specific domains, such as .ie or .fr, are already associated with a country or region. If you don’t want your site associated with any location, select Unlisted. (Note: If you do this, your site will probably receive less traffic from Google.)

For more information, see the Webmaster Tools Help Center. - Hosting IP Address : I cannot be quite sure about this because as per some blog articles its known that if a website owner wants his website to rank for UK ie google.co.uk, then his website should be hosted in UK based web-hosting servers. This is one of the main reason many people keep looking for different web hosting accounts and also register the same in different countries. Only people who have implemented this step and have got success can give a answer to this.
- Backlinks : This is a very important factor for your website ranking because if you have got strong authority backlinks, your website would rank in the tops and help you in getting loads of traffic. The backlinks in this section would mean from country based related domain names. This means that if a webmaster wants to get his website ranked in google.ie ie targeted for Ireland Visitors then he should get backlinks from Ireland based websites for better results.
Another thing that might help with getting better local ranks is getting your company listed on Google Maps/ Bing and Yahoo. These listings seem to provide searchers with local results.

Its not easily possible to generate backlinks from a high PR site. Better was is to write articles like lists which could get listed on other blogs and websites with High PR. you can also go in direct contact with them and may be trade links.
Most people try to go for the .com variation of the domain name they have in mind. But this is not always a good idea if you’re business only ships to your country, because you may rank lower in those results.

From my least experience. I have hosted my site in India as it is my target place. also set the Geo target to India in webmaster tools. It is not heavy traffic site; at present average 300 unique visitors/day from search engines.The fact is 91% traffic comes from India. 2 % from usa 1 % from uk & 1% uae and so on. I think it works.
