Sony Reader Digital Book Review

July 28, 2008 by Amit Bhawani

Sony has launched their Digital eBook Reader which is claimed to be the worlds first ebook reader which works similarly in the way Kindle works for amazon’s store products. Sony Reader would work for reading .pdf and DRM-free text from Sony Store. The Sony product is 60$ cheaper but offers only 45000 titles and Amazon’s Kindle is more preferred even though its costly because you can access a bigger library which is around 1,40,000 titles.

Sony Reader Digital BookWith the launch sony is offering a Limited Red Coloured Edition of this eReader to boost their launch sales and would also support Adobe Digital Editions software enabling users to read copyright-protected PDF files. Hopefully the next version ie eReader (the PRS-505) would support many new file formats. The current pricing of Sony eReader starts with 299.99$ and you can select a wide range of Covers to protect your Reader Digital Book from Scratches in variants of Silver & Dark Blue.

You can read upto 7500 continious pages on a single charge.
Can hold upto 160 ebooks at a time.
Requires Internet Connection to upload/download files and currently the eBook store limited to US residents only

Does this mean that if I buy this over-priced garbage (or Kindle, for that matter) all the ebooks I have remain confined to my computer? If they are asking THAT price it better support ALL formats.

I would actually buy it if it had more supported file types. And how thin and ligh is it? small enough to slip in you pocket, or do you need a bag or briefcase to carry it :S An also, the price is a little high for it.

There is no authorised dealer. But some electronic gadget shops (like a shop at the basement of South City Mall in Kolkata) imports and sells them. But the price is exorbitant. A 360$ Kindle 2 sells at Rs. 28000/-. A 180$ Jetbook costs Rs. 19500/-.

A good one, but which do you think will have wider marketshare – Kindle or Sony?
