Optimize WordPress Pinging Option – Plugins for Update Services

March 11, 2010 by Amit Bhawani

WordPress is considered as one of the best CMS not only because it has a large number of features but also because its backed up with numerous developers & coders who keep contributing towards the community and help other Bloggers with useful addon’s. One of these excellent features is the option to Ping the Search Engines whenever you publish a new blog post. This is very useful because the Update Services can notify others when your blog is updated with fresh content. Whenever you Publish a new blog post, the Update Services will send a XML-RPC Ping and this is also valid when you even edit a post and republish it making the changes again updated and shown to everyone. The service has its own advantages as mentioned above and disadvantages like the Search Engines would consider this is spamming because you continuously notify them with the same posts URL multiple times unknowingly. Hence we need to fix this issue of stopping the pinging option whenever a blog post is updated and published.

You can find the Update Services option at wp-admin/options-writing.php section where in you can add the WordPress Ping List and all the URL’s mentioned there will be notified. This also works when you update your posts which are already published or else when you schedule blog posts. There are also different services like Feed Shark which would allow you to quickly ping upto around 60 different services instantly for free of cost, while i personally use the Feedburner option of ‘Ping Shot’ which is listed under the ‘Publicize’ menu option.

There have been issues with WordPress users where in their blogs have been banned in search engines following which they are searching for ways to stop multiple pinging at our Help Desk. One of the best plugins i can recommend you is the Ping Optimizer which can help you in not repinging the update services and managing this whole system.

Another useful plugin is the Cbnet Ping Optimizer which also performs similar job by disabling the pings when you edit or update the posts. Also when you schedule & publish the posts, there wont be any multiple pings performed. Stop the problem of getting banned from Ping Services using these excellent wordpress plugins.
