With the UL range, Asus presents new notebooks with a slim and elegant design. They are of three display sizes – UL30, UL80 and UL50. The UL50 models are based on the dedicated NVIDEA G 210M graphic chip set and have a 15.6 inch display. The UL50Vt notebook is equipped with HD display that has a resolution of 1366×768 pixels, an Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 processor, a 4 GB DDR3-8500 RAM, a 320 GB hard disk memory from Seagate and NVIDEA’s GeForce. It costs about 899 euro.

The Asus has a case made of mostly plastic. The eye-catcher of the Asus case is the display lid which is made of silver. The design looks elegant, modern and not too obtrusive. The case’s workmanship and the finish give a very high-end impression despite the applied plastic. The UL50Vt weighs 2.40 kilograms at a size of 368 x 259 x 12.4 – 26.5 millimeters. The UL range is highly impressive with its slim construction. The case only yields at excessive, point pressure. The slim display also has an LED backlight. The 320 GB hard disk can be accessed from Seagate and the 4GB DDR3 RAM from Hynix via the faceplate. The maximum supported memory size is 4GB. The UL50Vt has a solid measure of connections for a multimedia notebook. It has two USB 2.0 ports, audio sockets, a 5-in-1 card reader, DC-in and an HDMI port for connecting external monitors and Televisions.

It also provides a 60 day trial versions of a few software such as Microsoft Office 2007, Trend-micro Internet Security, Adobe Reader 9, etc. In the keyboard, there is a separate numerical block and it has a very user friendly layout. It also has an integrated touchpad that has a pleasant surface with small craters. This helps to navigate precisely and easily. The response sensitivity is pretty good and the setting options are very comprehensive. The touchpad supports various multi touch gestures. The keys of the mouse have pleasant pressure point and response time. Asus offers a matt display alternative for the normal high gloss display. It has a high resolution and wide screen format. It has an illumination of about 80% which is good. Its color representation and saturation are fair enough. An important feature of the UL range is the Asus’ Turbo33 technology which over locks the processor and supplies up to 33% more performance. Asus has built in two stereo loudspeakers from ALTEC Lansing which provides good sound. This is necessary since it has been mainly conceived for the multimedia field.

Overall, the Asus is a good notebook which has very low power consumption as well as good performance. This makes it a good option for anyone who is thinking of getting a notebook soon.
