How to Count Words in an Article that I have written?

March 19, 2010 by Yogesh Patel

A Question by Elliot: I write around 5-6 article daily on different topics, selecting a topic is not a big task but the hurdles is counting the number of words that my each article has because I need to provide the exact word count as I get paid per word that I write. So is their any free software by which I can know the exact word count?

Answer: You have written an article and suppose if your counting manually you would lose atleast 5 minutes in counting all those words and yet will n’t find the exact word count in the article! Don’t sit and count there are lot many site based on word count which actually uses Javascripts to count the words present.

Javascript Kit is one of the such web application site which is completely collection of Javascripts which can help you in real time, their Cut & Paste Word Count is an live example.

If you want to calculate the number of words present in your article Open Cut & Paste Word Count and paste the total article and hit on Calculate Words. The total number of words will be shown right next to it.

Also, you can display the same web application on your blog by simply copying the Script present below and paste it on to your blog. The script is

<form method=”POST” name=”wordcount”>
<script language=”JavaScript”>

function countit(){

/*Word count script
By JavaScript Kit (http://javascriptkit.com)
Over 400+ free scripts here!
*/

var formcontent=document.wordcount.wordcount2.value
formcontent=formcontent.split(” “)
document.wordcount.wordcount3.value=formcontent.length
}
</script>
<table border=”0″ cellspacing=”0″ cellpadding=”0″>
<tr>
<td width=”100%”><textarea rows=”12″ name=”wordcount2″ cols=”60″ wrap=”virtual”></textarea></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td width=”100%”><div align=”right”><p><input type=”button” value=”Calculate Words”
onClick=”countit()”> <input type=”text” name=”wordcount3″ size=”20″></p>
<div align=”center”><center><p><font face=”arial” size=”-2″>This free script provided by</font>
<font face=”arial, helvetica” size=”-2″><a href=”http://javascriptkit.com”>JavaScript
Kit</a></font></p>
</center></div></div></td>
</tr>
</table>
</form>

Practical Inference:
Today I sat back and compared one article. I posted it Cut & Paste Word Count and also posted in Admin area of my wordpress blog as a new post. You might know that wordpress default shows Word Count below the description in every post editor. What I inferred is Word Count at Cut & Paste Word Count is always slightly more than wordpress editor word count ! So which one is correct? Might have the difference come in special characters and numbers I guess. Anyways Mr. Elliot I hope this post helps you.

    You can always use MS Word. I guess MS word tells you both characters and no of words 🙂
    Good luck

      Exactly MS Word is the best choice. But he has asked for a free software.

      The first thing that comes to my mind is of course the WordPress dashboard 😀

    Amazing thing what I have observed is the word count in wordpress dashboard is always less than word count at http://www.javascriptkit.com/script/script2/countwords.shtml

    Interesting. Three pages of search results
    and still not a single mention of how many
    spaces count as a word.
    Microsoft really does rule.

    “Count Anything” (http://ginstrom.com/CountAnything/) is a free word-count utility for Windows that might do the jib.

    The better alternative is the Word Count available in Microsoft Word Document.
