Asus Eee PC 1005 PE Laptop Review

March 20, 2010 by Tony Stark

Asus is the company that has to be credited with inventing the Net-Book category. Hence Asus makes some of the best and most popular mini notebooks around. Top among these is the EEE PC 1005 series. It is a combination of low price with great battery life and good overall design which makes the 1005 the Net-book reference design for the entire industry. The Asus EEE PC 1005PE Net-book was launched quiet recently in the European market.

Asus Eee PC 1005 PE LaptopThe EEE PC 1005PE is the latest version of the Asus which is the first Net-book to that has the Intel’s new Atom N450 processor which is the sequel of Atom N270 and N280 CPUs found in all the other Net-books. The 1005 is the re-engineered Atom platform which is extremely efficient and runs for more than 8 hours in the battery drain test. Hence it is the most efficient net-book in the market today. The 1005PE incorporates in it most of the recent trends in Net-book design with a 10 inch display having 1024 x 600 pixels resolution. It uses the Windows 7 operating system and 1GB RAM and 800MHz DDR2. The hard drive is 160GB with 5400rpm. It uses the Intel NM10 chipset and an integrated Mobile Intel GMA 3150 graphics set. It weighs about 2.8 to 3.4 pounds and costs 379$.

The design of the 1005PE is similar to that of previous 1005 models with a slight taper towards the front lip and gently rounded edges on the lid. It has flat topped widely spaced keys with a slightly lesser surface area which makes typing easier. The touchpad is quite small and is build right into the wrist rest and demarcated by a rectangle of tiny raised dots. It uses the synaptic technology which feels very good while moving your finger across the touchpad. The new Atom N450 provides both low power consumption and enhanced performance. It runs at 1.66GHz. The 1GB SDRAM is good enough for normal everyday tasks and the 250GB HDD is also enough to store all your favorite music and videos. The speaker sound quality is very good without any distortion even when it has to be played in loud volume. The 1005PE has both Wi-Fi and Blue-tooth. The overall design is a little thicker with its removable battery, but the quality is very good for a budget notebook such as this and has a pretty solid feel to it.

Hence, we can summarize the EEE PC 1005PE as the first Net-book with new Intel Atom N450 CPU which has a fantastic battery life. It lacks modern Net-book upgrades such as HD display and an extra RAM. As the first next-gen Intel Atom Net-book, it is one of the leading products in the market today.
