15 Broadband Speed Test Tools Broadband Terminology

July 6, 2008 by Amit Bhawani

Here are some of the Broadband Speed Terms which can help you out in understand more about broadband related terms :

  1. QOS : Its the level of consistency in your download capacity by the broadband service provider. If the percentage of QOS is high you can expect a better quality of internet connection which would be helpful while making VOIP/Voice based phone calls which generally should be avoided on a low quality connection.
  2. Max Pause : This is the amount of time when there are no data packets recieved by you computer through the broadband connection, the lower the better because if you have a large amount of max Pause it clearly means that you have a problem in your connection which gets down regularly.
  3. RTT : Round Trip Time is the amount of time required to send a small data packet and get a reply back to the same which is generally measured in milliseconds (ms) and this is used while internet speed tests, the faster RTT you get its the better for your broadband connection.
  4. Data Packet : Every webpage you generally load on your computer comes as a series of small data packets and the internet network sends and recieves these data packets when you open a webpage or send a email to some one. The packets carry the data using Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) with each packet being generally of 1000-1500 bytes size. When you send a email, its broken into small data packets and sent through the network.

The best advantage of using a speed test tool is that you can monitor and find out if you are offered with the broadband internet speeds you are paying for or not, based on this you can also increase broadband speed. Generally some local service providers claim high internet speeds but when you use the internet you feel its very less than your expectations. The trick these guys do if to resell your bandwidth to others because most users dont really know their correct internet speeds.

Check out these 10 Broadband Speed Checking Meters[Broadband Speed Test for Cable, DSL and Modem] which can help you in accurately measuring bandwidth by download data packets to your computer/laptop and re-uploading back to find out the download and upload speed. You can also continuous speed monitors to find out the average speed from a longer time slot but its basically waste of time.

Its generally recommended to close all the applications using Task Manager and run the speed test programs one by one to get the most accurate results. The Results may show big changes but that would be because of the broadband fluctuations. Do let me know whats your broadband internet speed.
