Exploring my new Sony Vaio CR Laptop

I already had a sony vaio VGN series 15.4″ laptop previously but it was a bit heavy weight of a weight around 3Kgs which is bulky while travelling and the apple mac book which i purchased last week is under chetan patel’s control 🙂 , so i went forward to the nearest Sony world and got a new Aroma Black Sony CR series laptop which looks a very cool laptop with many advanced features like core 2 duo T7100 , In built camera, finger recognization technologo and lot more features like windows Vista pre installed – VGN-CR 12G. The pricing came around 54900 indian rupees and a extra wireless mouse cost me extra 4100 indian rupees. Attached is a pic taken from my mobile phone because i could not find a official photo from sony.com
Now this old laptop is going to be given to my staff, and let me explore all the features of this new notebook.

  13. Its a excellent laptop with preinstalled Vista and webcam and lot more, you can go for this and iam sure the price would still have been reduced than the 55000Rs i have paid.

  14. The price is still 54990 . Actually the model i have selected is CR-24G/B.
    What about the key pad it’s fabulous or lacks some important keys?

    What is battery life?
    Side view of the screen is also clear?

    These are some of the problems I came across on internet about this mode is it true?

  17. Last saturday i bought cr24G from sony world (Jayanagar) banglore.
    It cost me 54990/-
    THere is no price fall.

  19. I WOULD LIKE TO BRING THIS TO YOUR NOTICE!!!

    tHE CR RANGE’S CLICK BUTTON(THE LEFT ONE) HAS A PROBLEM.

    if one checks various laptops of the shelf of similar make(cr range) and clicks the left click button(below the touch pad)….you will find inconsistency among all the models….the problem lies in shallow click, especially towards the left hand bottom corner of the left click button

    again this is more prominent in laptops of cr range with finger print scanner in between the two click buttons……..manufacturing flaw i guess…..

    the problem is present in my new laptop(cr 24 black colour)……i got a ridiculous explanation at the service center saying that , ” you should be clicking at the centre of the click button and not in the left bottom corner of the click button!!!”….though the right side click button works fine in any area !!!!!!

    this seems to be in line with a similar glitch found in vaio laptop…wherein the space bar doesnt respond towards the extreme left side…this has been well documented in you tube video aswell!!!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8s0qTjNFKQ

    sony seems to be launching expensive products without any proper testing!!!!

    ps. the click seems to be softter at the mentioned zone and varies from laptop to laptop of the same model….i foresee the failure of the click button after few months of useage….if the state is such in a brand new laptop!!!

  23. GUYS U ALL TALK ABOUT CR 26. DO U KNOW CR-36 IS IN THE MARKET. IT HAS 2.2 GHZ, 2GB RAM, FINGERPRINT TECH, 256 MB GRAPHICS CARD,CARD READER,MEMORYSTICK,WEB CAM,ETC. AND ALL THIS FOR JUST 55000/-. BUT I MANAGED TO GET IT FOR 53000. NO OTHER LAPTOP HAS SUCH BRILLIANT CONFIG…..SHASHANK NAGPUR

I m using this laptop for quite a long time..This is my first laptop.but i think its best…You can imagine after sale support better than this from sony..They give support through tool free number.Its Performance is also very good.Some Problems which were there while lauch of this product have already been eliminated.No problem yet..if you have any problem you can mail me.i am quite expert in computer feild…

  29. Amit.. vaio is coming with vista. my friend is telling vista a disaster.. especially with multimedia works. Help me. Recommend me vaio with model no..so that i would check here in chennai. will you recommend The shining silver keypoard or black one?

  31. I have recently purchased Sony Vaio CR series Aroma Black model.. It’s just excellent! Amazing config and has every feature that you can think off.. Really enjoying using it..

  32. @ Nitin BHalla : just drop into any Sony world and you can find their excellent support staff would help you out, in total i purchased 3 Sony Vaio laptops and 1 macbook and i would always recommend Sony products.

    @ nasim ahmed : Check out Sony World’s in Bangladesh.

    @ inzs h : sony.co.in is the main website where you can find the complete products series and their latest pricing with combo offers.

    @ sadiq : sadiq vista does suck but you can always downgrade to windows XP if you are not ok with Vista, there are also transformation packs available on the web.

    @ ramesh : with the latest huge price drop you can find excellend models in your budget.

    @ shirsendu : you did the right choice in buying that laptop because it comes with webcam and excellent features.

  33. Does anyone know if the CR 36G can be upgraded with a stronger-graphics card. It’s a beautiful system and great value for money. Just think the graphics card could have been more powerful !!

  40. My son has purchased one Sony vaio model PCG.5G 3L AT UNITED STATES where he is doing PHD at Princeton university. The Lap top is for his brother WHO is studding at LOYALA College at Madras India. The cost at US was 1250 US dollar. After functioning 8 months the Lap Top battery is not charging even though the battery is allright.when I took the same to service centre of Sony AT MADRAS INDIA they told that the complete mother board itself to be changed even though only the power supply arrangement only FAILED AND ASKIG RS 25000 for repair. No other service centre is prepared to accept Sony LAP TOP citing Sony will not sell lap top spare parts. I honestly advise Indian settled at us NOT to buy any thing at US which cannot be serviced at India. THE so called qualified electronics engineering graduate at Sony service center cannot replace one IC in a mother board simply they want to replace the entire board itself. AS such don’t by any thing even with inter national warranty of Sony product at US or anywhere especially if it is to be used in India. We cannot go to consumer court also. The japnes who is noted for their honesty is some how becoming bad. I also request any other service center who can repair Sony lap top other then Sony service centre.

  41. CR series is crap model from Sony, its specs are good but built is very poor. The outer metal border catches rust. And if you are long hours user you will see scratches just below the Sony logo on screen, because the chipset below it gets heated up and causing slight bulging due to heat, which in turn makes the screen panel get scratches.

    The processor cooling is also not great, you cannot keep it on you lap for long time, other wise you will be “tandori kabab”.

    It has driver compatibility issues with XP and in Fedora Linux none of its additional keys work, play, stop, forward can be mapped. And since its 82keys keyboard many would find it irritating if you use, home, page up, page down etc.

    On performance its a great machine, and value for money.

    Buying a CR 343N so just needed some info for Sony CR 343N series. What abt itz compatibility for Linux. People say that Itz support for 3d graphics if poor. Please comment on these.

  43. Difficult to say about CR and Xps notebooks. But CR is best choice as Dell is unable to reach some parts of India plus not give services like Sony

    it has only 128 mb graphics card.

    frankly telling i am a software eng.wud like to suggest u to buy dell.
    same feature,speed and all at very low price.and dell is also a good comapny.dell retail has started in india.u will get it in 45000 wat u get in vaoi at 55000.only brand name is there.no difference.rest your choice

  56. i am also having a vgn-cr343n and m quite a brand loyal customer of sony products but a within a year of purchasing the laptop it started giving problem related to software so i need to format my lappy thrice within a year n that was ok, coz software problem no issues…but this time within 15 months after purchase it started giving serious problem(it switched off itself after few mins of use)n when i contacted sony service centre they told me that mother board was damaged n told me that it will take 1 month to get repairedwhich was quite a shock to me. N now i need to take it to Kolkata to get it repaired fast at my own expense. so not satisfied with sony service. Earlier i was a big time fan of sony products as i purchased every electronic gadgets from starting from pendrive to cybershot to television everything but now i think strong competition has taken a toll on sony n their quality is also degrading fast. Motherboard crash within a year is something horrible even after so delicate handling. N regarding vista business OS its very slow on vaio so would suggest prospective vaio buyers to downgrade to windows xp for better performance but otherwise vaio rocks wherever u take it wid u….n it feels really nice when people appreciate….apart from all this vaio is a good option to go for n even today my lappy is in service centre i still luv it…..

      I am also facing the same issue as you were facing.
      My Sony Vaio VGN-CR343N laptop get’s shutdown randomly without any warning.
      The laptop is out of warranty now and the service center guy is asking to replace the motherboard.
      Also they are giving only 1 month warranty after replacement….
      Did you went ahead with with motherboard replacement and did your machine worked fine after that… ??
