Google Instant Launched – Will it Kill Long Tail Search Queries?

September 9, 2010 by Amit Bhawani 2 Comments

Google has finally launched the predicted version of their Search which is the Instant Search where in you don’t even have to press the ‘Enter’ button and still get the web results. The service is useful for those billions of users who search for information using this Search Engine gaint, but the main issue is for the website owners and the Search Engine Optimizers who have been working on optimizing their websites for getting on the top and now with Live and faster results there are chances that the results and search trends would just change.

Google Instant Search

Google claims that an average search query previously was taking much more time and with this new change on an average you can save around 2-5 seconds per search which is quite good. The service will predict and show results based on previously visited websites which is something like personalized results and not directly sending the user to the best results.

How this works : You start typing on the Google Search Box and the results start displaying with every character added to the query the results change and relevant results are displayed.

Google Instant Time Saved

Facts by Google :

  • Before Google Instant, the typical searcher took more than 9 seconds to enter a search term, and we saw many examples of searches that took 30-90 seconds to type.
  • Using Google Instant can save 2-5 seconds per search.
  • If everyone uses Google Instant globally, we estimate this will save more than 3.5 billion seconds a day. That’s 11 hours saved every second.
  • 15 new technologies contribute to Google Instant functionality.

Now lets get back the point of Long Tail Keywords and Key phrases. Previously whenever someone was interested in booking a “Budget Hotel at New Delhi” they would just search the same in Google for getting more specific results. There were also related searches by people who used to search with key-phrases like –

Budget Hotels in New Delhi near Metro Stations
Budget Hotels in New Delhi in 5000Rs rates
Budget Hotels in New Delhi with Veg Food
Budget Hotels in New Delhi with Wifi

But with the Google Instant Service, these all queries would just be killed because when someone starts typing ‘budget hotels new d’ the results for this query are shown and the user would just stop here and continue with the results provided, rather than continuing as shown below.

Google Instant Search Effects

The above stuff is only applicable only when someone searches using the Google.com or any Google based search sites, but when they search for something through the Google toolbar or the Custom Search Engine which is installed on different websites or blogs they would get the same old results which is google for website owners. Lets hope there is not much loss for everyone in terms of visitors count with this new update from Google.

Dont think it will complete kill the long tail keywords, people who generally makes searches using longtail keywords are the one who are interested in specific things.

Yes the instant search will definitely reduce queries of longtail keyword but it wont kill it, as many people will still use longtail keyword for what they are looking for.

I think this feature is a very helpful for the person who is searching for information. And I guess google’s main customer’s are people who come in ‘search of information’. But Yes, for Webmasters, Instant Search has increased a challenge especially for keywords. I have seen a huge impact on my website when Instant Search was launched. But then it also helped me to understand the more keywords which I was ignoring earlier.
