How Google Panda Update Went Wrong – Few Proofs

April 23, 2012 by Amit Bhawani 28 Comments

The Google Farmer / Panda Update was announced on February 23th which affected the Google US Data-centers and all the Google US based results. It was covered well here – Danny Sullivan’s take, Aaron Wall’s assessment, SearchMetrics’ analysis, Sistrix’s data-driven post and Seomoz with most of these referring that the Content Scraper Sites were hit though eHow actually gained from this.

The next global update was around 14th April 2011 when Google announced that this could affect many more websites and this was mainly targeted towards Low Quality Content websites, sites which were automatically republishing others content etc, though not listing the exact update information. Source : Google Webmaster Central Blog

The update was incorporating user feedback which included many more signals in order to rank higher quality content websites on the top and making the low quality content sites to move down on the SERPS. Even though this affected only 2% of the U.S. queries but overall the webmasters experienced a loss of traffic in the range of 40-60% after the fall in rankings. Here is a small traffic fall for one major blog after the Global Farmer / Panda Update.

Traffic Decrease Stats

The following is a example of how the Post-Panda SERPS where in the original articles are not even ranking in the top for the complete post title. In this case the title is Google Panda Update – Top Traffic Losers & Winners List which is just a very simple example. The blog is 3 years old, where never any copied content was published but still it got into the Panda Algorithm mess and lost major rankings.

Google SERPS

Another post at seomoz suggests that at several instances the Original Content is being outranked by Content Scrapers and Partners and still not being fixed.

How To Remove Your Name and Profile Picture from Facebook’s Social Ads Original Source is #9 on Google.

Google Bing SERPS

The best part of all these issues is that there is no way you could report directly to Google other than submitting a reconsideration request which would report back saying that there was no issue found and also a thread at Google Webmasters Central asking you to post your problem, If you Think you’re affected by the recent algorithm change. The thread has over 2000 posts and there is a very slight chance that Google would actually look into this and get back to the site owners who are reporting their problems.

Another Search Update which hits Original Content based sites and gives more power to the Scrapers. Do report using the following comments section if you find your content is outranked by other sites.

Note : This article was published by us on another blog which has got expired now, hence its Republished here.

Thats true, i used to wrote original articles of around 500-700 words on my website & achieved 4-5K daily traffic within 2 months but after the update i lost my traffic so much that i have shut my website down and planning to start it in next few months.

This Panda update has changed everything related to search e.g., SEO, Content and Link Building etc. Many of big bloggers lost a big portion of their search but I have also seen many of them regaining this. For example, Harsh had lost a large portion of his search traffic. But he has regained it as per one of his recent posts. I have been closely following his posts and the biggest reason that might have caused the panda hit was “thin content” , as he says. Personally I haven’t seen any drop in traffic on any of my sites or blogs. So for me, whoever were hit, were doing something wrong.

Thats the same happening with us
Some popular websites are copying our content and scraping our ideas without any source , and they are ranking up
we are doing Hard work , research and research on that
    writing unique content
we cant do any thing with idea stealers
    What to do know
    I am fully demotivated now
But i wanna do some thing with these guys & sites , and i will do

Amith, I strongly agree with your points. My blog was infected (I had to use this term) by Google’s recent Google page layout algorithm, but there are few number of blogs scraps article from our blogs have 2 300*250 ads above the fold they have better rank them ours. I think Google really failed this time with its frequent updates.

    Amit,

Most of the points mentioned in your article is very true. Many of my websites lost about 40%-50% traffic after last week Panda update. We have original content and never allowed any duplicate content anywhere in our sites. Our sites were never affected by Panda before and in fact our traffic was improved a bit after each Panda update in the past. But this time, the Panda is really messed up. Sadly, one of our primary sites pushed down to the bottom of search results or was eliminated from search results and all copy scrapers who reproduced our content are promoted to the top of search results. I was really surprised to see one of my research article, which I took about 2 weeks to prepare, was pushed down to Page 3 of search results for the relevant keyword search and a copy cat who reproduced my article was way ahead in the search results. My said article was even linked from Wikipedia but Google failed to consider even that factor and decided to consider the copy cat who only had a single article in his blog as the original.

I think my biggest mistake was not filing DMCA complaints against the copy cats regularly.

Its all about doing the right things at the right time and we should never rely on Google expecting them to know who is original and who is not.

I don’t even understand how I finished up here, however I thought this post used to be good. I do not know who you’re but certainly you’re going to a well-known blogger should you are not already. Cheers!

Many new bloggers are trying to copy content from some popular blogs as a result the source blogs are being affected. Instead of copying they have to learn some thing and have to write articles based on their research.

Content plagiarism is really too bad for unique content writers, Copiers just easily build content and they also achieve BlackHat SEO techniques. What about Unique content writers? Google officially said that they will bring more than 500 Improvements to their search algorithm. So wait and watch?

Google Panda keeps us blogger really busy and we spend more time in protecting our rankings than focus on writing good and unique content. Google Please do something about this.

@Amit – “reconsideration request” is just an flame of light too far, There could be many other factors apart from content spamming and possibly included some more. Penguin give us a hard time and it’s not a time to throw in a towel.

There might me million of exceptions in terms of HQ sites .. Lolzzzz.

BTW – This is going to be a turning point in SEO and link building strategy 🙂

    Nice Pick Amit 🙂

This means that traffic went to meaningful sites not just ‘original’ sites. Just because your blog lost traffic does not mean that the Panda is a fail. That is the childish way to look at it. If I write crap everyday, that is not useful to anyone then expect that article to be in top search results just because the article is original, then who is to blame?

First learn to write good content then curse others lol

These updates are driving website owners crazy. 1 day your website is generating tons of traffic and the next day Google knocks you around and takes some of that traffic away.
