Guide on Buying Hp Laptops or Apple MacBook Pros & Cons

February 22, 2008 by Amit Bhawani

I recently got a email from one of my blog’s visitor who was confused whether to go for Hp Laptops or Apple MacBook’s, followed is his question.

Sir,
I wish to purchase a laptop and I’m currently interested brands of HP and apple.I’ll be in bangalore soon and i’d like to know which brand would be better for me.I have a budget of 65k[1600USD] and the primary use for the laptop will be for surfing/gaming and playing movies/music and common work like spreadsheets, writing reports etc. : Aveek

First of all let me show you all the available HP & Apple Macbook models in India and which would come in under the above mentioned budget of 1600 USD. Both these company laptops are considered as the best laptops. From the requirement you would normally look for laptops with a minimum of 15″ because thats always recommended for surfers /gamers and for music/movies entertainment. Regarding spreadsheets, writing reports you would normally look for Microsoft word or related applications which would be applicable in windows operating systems, because if you buy a Apple macbook you wont get MS office in it.

Laptop Model Price Features
Apple-MacBook (Core2 Duo 7200) 57000Rs Intel Core2 Duo 7200 + 1Gb Ram + 13.3′ Display + 1280 x 800 Resolution + Mac OS X Tiger + Built-in Camera
Apple-MacBook (Core2 Duo 7400, White) 65000Rs Intel Core2 Duo 7400 + 1GB Ram + 13.3′ Display + 1280 x 800 Resolution + Mac OS X Tiger
HP-Pavilion dv6701AU 40000Rs AMD Turion 64×2 TL-58 + 1GB Ram + Windows Vista Home Premium + GeForce Go 7150M 287 Mb Video Card
HP-Pavilion dv2701TX 50000Rs Intel Core2 Duo T5450 + 1GB RAM + NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS 128Mb Video Card + 14.1′ Display + 160Gb HDD
HP-Pavilion dv6137TX 62000Rs Intel Core2 Duo T5500 + 1GB Ram + 120Gb HDD + 15.4′ Display + Windows XP Media Centre Edition + 5 in 1 Digital Media
Reader, S-Video + NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 128Mb Video Card
HP-Pavilion dv2701TU 41000Rs Intel Pentium Dual Core T2330 + 1Gb Ram + 160Gb HDD + Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 251Mb Video Card + Windows Vista Home Premium

I hope the above comparision of different Apple & HP models would help you in selecting the best laptop based on your requirement & budgets. If you have got any similar question/doubt dont forget to send me your question using the contact form

till just two weeka ago i owned an HP Pavilion dv2119tx. It was everything I expected and more… at least for the first 9months.. then one day out of the blue it just crashed (eventhough I was not a power user) it was under warranty at the time so when i checked it out they told me that the graphic card had malfunctioned…and the main board had to be changed. it was.. now less than 3 months later it crashed once more.. same problem.. now its gonna cost me IRs.19,000!thats nearly 1/3 its cost! so i junked it and now im currently using a Sony Vaio CR – VGN-CR35G/L… and it cost less than my old one! so if you would like my sincere opinion, i’d go for a mac book anyday…

And my story is not just an isolated case.. just ask your friends who use HP notebooks…or someone who knows someone who uses one.. Everyone Has a horror story about data Loss.. Hardware failure and lack of quality aftersales service! Nice to look at, nice to hold… buy one and consider yourself screwed!

well.. i was a proud owner of both HP dv2701TX and apple macbook… i was thoroughly satisfied with both. But my apple macbook crashed after just one year of use.. and my HP laptop got stolen so i will always wonder how would tht laptop’s life would have ended… well.. bt even when i was using HP.. i wasn’t very satisfied as i was a MAC user.. and MAC users don’t get used to windows as it is much slower than MAC.. and windows used to get hung at drop of hat or somethin would stop working… so.. agreed tht MAC do have slightly more maintanence to do but it is a very good laptop.. and the plus point is.. there are no viruses that can enter MAC.. as there are no viruses made for MAC still.. so no headache of anti-virus blah blah.. so.. i would suggest MAC book anyday.. and plus the photo booth is a cherry on top.. 😛

HP Laptops– I would avoid it like the bubonic plague. We had a similar problem (nVidia Graphics chip failing causing the display to fail. This was a known problem for nVidia and HP but HP has not extended the warranty in India.

In short, the only thing worse than HP products is their attitude to customers and their service.

I am a music director by profession. I want to use “Logic Pro” software which runs only on mac. Please tell me the specifications for the laptop. also tell me about the price. I’m new to mac coz i worked on Cubase with windows earlier. So, kindly tell me the detailed specifications which i can give to the dealer.

    Thank You !

Well.. any mac laptop will be able to run the logic pro… as the softwares of MAC are made for all the laptops.. but if you are a professional.. i would suggest you to buy a MAC Pro as it is a professional laptop.. as Macbook is a student’s laptop.. so.. yea… and referring to the main question above.. i finally bought an Apple Macbook again.. i simply couldn’t resist staying away from MAC.. And Mac OS leopard is awesome.. way better than Mac OS tiger…
    Hope it helped… 🙂

    Regards.

Regarding your reply to Aveek about whether to buy an HP or a Mac you are wrong about your references to MS Office as MS do Apple specific versions which have full functionality with PC versions.

Never ever think of buying HP products, especially laptops…i own a HPdv2701tx model…It was working fine for 1.5 years but then the graphics card failed…It is a shame that the company still goes on to launch its products inspite of knowing about its faulty design with regard to the graphics card and cooling fan…i have shelled out Rs 9380 for repairing the chipset…The worst fact is that i am not a gamer or 24*7 user and this was supposed to be a gaming laptop with features meant for that…This problem is not one of a kind and even the HP authorized service center guys acknowledge the fact that these pavilion models are failure models…
