How to Auto Backup Data Online with Synchronization

July 21, 2010 by Amit Bhawani

Mozy LogoWe have previously written many articles on why a backup of your data is important and how you can easily create a Back up of your data and restore it when you want to using the Data Backup Tools. Our office was recently burgled and 4 of our important computers were stolen which were not worth much but the data in those computer was worth a lot of time and money. We didn’t take any backups of these and finally after going through this kind of situation we have taken a goal to setup a backup of all the data online which can be accessed from any computer in case of a loss. These kind of backups are also important when the local computer’s hard disk drive gets crashed or when there is a natural disaster at your home or office.

After going through several web services and comparing their features we have found that Mozy is one service provider which offers the Back up facility for free of cost upto a initial 2Gb of data size. The best part is that you can easily setup a dual backup system where in the cloud backup service will allow you to configure backup systems online as well as on a external hard disk drive which can be connected using USB Ports. Before you get started into understanding the setup process you need to make a note that the Online Backup is good but takes a lot of time initially to upload all the data and this purely depends on the Internet Upload speed offered by your Internet Service Provider (ISP), while the later sync’s and updates are quickly configured.

Some people have important data in the size of 300-500Gb which could take even months to get uploaded but since this is a backup service, its better to upload it and get ahead with the setup. We upload our Personal & Important photos to Flickr & Picasa Web services, following which the most important files stored in the computer range from 2-5Gb only which is easy to backup and handle.

To get started you need to click here and get a free account followed with a registration and email confirmation. Optionally you can use the Coupon Code – 5SJNQ3 while signup for getting a 2Gb free account along with a bonus 256Mb space. Once you have completed this Mozy would give you two links one for Windows & other for Mac based computers to download and install the respective software’s on your computer.

Once you have downloaded the software application and installed it, you will be shown with a window which says ‘MozyHome Setup Wizard’ and ask you to enter your account logins to get started as shown below.

Mozy Software Signin Window

Once you Login to your account you will be shown with a Summary of all your documents files and folders along with the files count in the form of a Summary Report.

You can click on the link in the above window which says ‘Change Encryption’ to change the type of data encryption from the default 448-bit Blowfish encryption to a Private Key.

Once the private key or the Encryption level is set you can continue with the Backup process which displays you with a report on the file which is being transferred, Files backed up & Files awaiting backup.

You need to keep your computer ON for the backup to be completed and stored in the cloud. You can anytime check the backup details on your online Mozy account and restore the files once there is a complete backup ready.
