July 30, 2009 by Amit Bhawani 1 Comment

Government of India has started e filing of income tax and Fringe Benefit tax returns since 2007.With just a few clicks you can file your tax returns online anytime of the day without any hassle of going to income tax office. Without having to spend too much time and very conveniently the e filing can be done. The online form has questions regarding income, expenditure and saving. It is easy and simple, and by following the simple instructions it can be finished in few minutes. Being a legal obligation of every citizen of India whose income has exceeded the non taxable maximum income, with the help of e filing it has become simple and convenient for everyone.

The forms can be obtained online from the income tax department website; https://incometaxindia.gov.in/. They also have a demo version of how to do the online e filling. There is also a FAQS section in the website to get more information, and any doubts can be cleared.
Income tax can be e filed in three ways. First type uses the digital signature and so no further verification is needed. Second type does not use the digital signature and so ITR-V (it is receipt and verification form) form should be filled. Third type is done with the help of an intermediary.

The appropriate form is opened online from the Income tax department and filled out offline and a XML file is generated. The next step is to register with the department y using user id and password. After logging in to the website XML file is browsed and uploaded. If the upload is successful then there will be a display of the details on clicking the print option the acknowledgment would be printed out. By using the id and password created, the online account can be viewed and status clarified at anytime.

If it is type1 form nothing more to do, because it is digitally signed. For other types of forms a verification form has to be downloaded, printed and sent to the nearest income tax office within 15 days of filling online by post or in person. ITR-V should be sent only by ordinary post. Those sent by speed post, registered post and by courier will be rejected. Public relation officer of the local income tax office can be approached for any assistance in filling the forms.
