Booking Indian Railways Tickets Online is generally not recommended because most of the times the indian railways website goes down and the customers lose their money because the payment gateway approves the funds and while transferring the data from their end to the railways website, the connection gets cut. This has happened to me twice while i used once my ICICI Gold Credit card and second time i used ICICI Direct Bank Payment, both the times the transactions failed because the connection could not be established and later we get a message saying we need to make the payment again.
On the other hand the railway department offers a PNR Enquiry toll free number which you can use in order to contact and get details about your latest transaction, and when you do the same you are told that they have not recieved any funds from ICICI nor Credit Card Company. When you contact the payment processing company they claim that the payment is made from their end and they you cannot do anything about this and we need to contact the railway officials.
There were recent cliams from the Indian railways that the online tickets booking has increased from 3% to 10% but wonder how many passengers are losing their hard earned money because of their useless backend software. Even if you check out the official railways website its full of google adsense ads which may be the IT department is using to fill in their pockets. Last time i checked out their website the ads turned out to be for premium publishers and this would be obvious with the huge traffic and now high income for the railways department.
Just check out the Passenger Reservation Enquiry website Here and compare to any other Airlines website, you can find the difference. The Airlines websites are mostly meant for business and customers which is the reason they have professional looking websites and also offer guides and tutorials on how to book a ticket, but the Indian railways website offers less information and more ads. May be if these guys upgrade their whole system they could make a lot more money from the online ticket booking service than what they make from these ads.
Oh God I should have read this comment! I tried to book the ticket on great Indian Railway web site. The money of about Rs 8000/- disappeared despite failed transactions. My ICICI credit card statement shows debit entries for failed transactions. It does not show any refunds on account of failed transactions but still Railways communicate that a refund is made. They asked me to furnish the latest statement of my account as though this shall help the refund! On furnishing the statement that no refund is made, the Railways autority is gone silent. Only God can help to get refund!
ya thts right suresh i have been facing the same problem even though i m an authorised agent for irctc
have u tried to mail ur problem to [email protected]
Indian Railways Net booking
Recently on August 14 I tried to book the tickets for my family on the net. At first it appears a great site and it has all the ingredients to become popular with the Netzens. But my experience is such that I am frightened of the use the net. What happened on that day? I registered with the Railway site with my E Mail and other particulars. I attempted twice for booking to Goa (Madgaon) by Train no. 0111 Konkan Kanya Express for 12th Nov.(Full 90 days in advance) journey date on 3AC. All the seats were available on that day. So I listed the names of the passengers, got the availability, fare from the site, entered my credit card details. The result! It indicated a failed transaction. I did not understand why? The net was fast. The traffic was not high? But to my surprise on checking I found the money is debited from my account. The railways informed me about the failed transaction through E Mail. And then sent me a mail to inform me of crediting account of refund in full. But to my surprise on checking the money is not credited in the account. When I informed that the money is not credited. The Railway promptly asked me to send the proof by way of scanned print of statement of account or the screen shot of the statement. I took me lot of effort to generate the statement and then scan it and sent to the Railways through E Mail. But still no refund.
This did not happen once but twice. This resulted in about Rs 8000/- Struck with the Railways.
The bank is unable to help. The railways are not helping. Where shall I go? How to get refund. I am a retired senior citizen. Can anybody help me in getting my money?
Now I am frightened to transact through the net specially the Railways. I am using the net to transact for many years but never had this type of experience.
I warn the user of the railways net reservation to take this experience in to account before transacting through the net.
How the Railways have the heart to ask me the proof of money not deposited in my account! On the other hand they shall furnish the proof of transaction of refunding the money in my account.
Secondly everyone is not fortunate to get the statement of the transactions so promptly and scan. Will they go by this proof and refund? They have to check at their end and give proof of refund transaction!
Why there should be a failed transaction at the first place when net is very fast? And why the money is debited from the account when there is failed transaction of booking tickets?

As per my knowledge railway site becomes slow after 8.00am but transactions can be made , and if ticket not booked by some reasons the amt will be refunded in 24 to 36 hrs. My experiance is good with railway. but they have to solve problems of slowing down server after 8.00am.
I am surprised to read your comments. Try using IRCTC site for ticket booking. I don’t know which website you guys are using to book the ticket. Let me tell you, the problem is not with railways software but the problem lies with ICICI bank gateway. Not only in railways but also in telecom or other online payments, ICICI gateway will deduct your amount but will not transfer the same to the vendor in stipulated time which cause for “Time Out” error. In these cases your card provider will claim to remmit the money to vendor but in actual it has not been. This problem is at this epitome with ICICI.
As per ads are concerned, railways has now put a strict check on its website for unauthorised use or publishing of ads. As it was commented that airlines website are full of business, I would like to add, this is simply business. Railways is trying to earn money by allowing ads on its website. What’s wrong in this????
I understand you all have faced hardships but would like to advice you to find the root cause of the issue before commenting on it. Just because Railways belongs to governement we can not rate all its services as THE POOREST.
Indian Railway online booking is offered by Yatra as their promotion service for rail booking. At no time I find difficulty in either acessing the the site nor booking tickets. It is a good service. Yatra also offers good service for cheap flight booking on various airlines
Of course, I also agree with the majority comments. The IRCTC ie. Indian Railways Booking Site is great, the customer response too is great.
On an average, i book tickets every month, and so far have not faced a single reason to complain.
Regarding the slowness at 8.00am, it is because
01) Tatkal window opens at 8.00am only.
02) Regular booking window too opens at 8.00am only.
So naturally, there will be a little more load on the Servers around 8.00am. This is a natural phenomena.
Look at the ALEXA under 1000 :O
guys guys for all of them dnt try booking frm internet explore just use mozilla or chrome ths will help ur booking done in morning 8:00am too just try it
