We finally have the iOS4 update officially available from Apple which is a large ipsw file to download on your computer. In this article we are going to discuss how to Jailbreak the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G on a Mac based computer. For windows check out our other Jailbreaking iOS4 article.

To get started you need to first update the iPhone or iPod Touch to the latest firmware version through the iTunes 9.2 application. Just connect the device to the Mac and then run the iTunes software to display you the update message, confirm on the same and proceed to complete this process. Once the update is successfully completed you will find that the iPhone device is locked and now its time to Jailbreak it to use it with any International cellular carrier network instead of just the AT&T.

Download the Redsn0w for Mac and proceed towards backing up a copy of the updated ipsw file on your desktop because the software would need this while jailbreaking. Connect the iPod Touch or iPhone to your Mac computer using the USB Cable and then run the Redsn0w DMG file which will show the following window.

Redsn0w Application

Next you will have to browse the ipsw file which you had downloaded and then click on the next button to proceed. The application will start an automatic process to patch the kernel as shown below.

Patching Kernel Redsn0w

Once the next screen once the kernel is patched you will find options to select the packages you want to install on your device. Select Install Cydia, Verbose Boot, Custom boot logo, Custom recovery logo, Enable Multitasking, Enable homescreen wallpaper, Enable battery percentage. Once you have selected the options click on the Next button to proceed.

Install Packages Redsn0w

Next you will asked to implement the DFU Mode on the device which can be performed by pressing the Home + Power button continuously for 10 seconds and then releasing the power button while continuing pressing the home button till you see the screen displays white. Following this the application will automatically start the process of jailbreak finally displaying the main home screen on the iPhone 3G. Next you will find a new Cydia icon on the home screen which you need to tap on.

Once you are inside the Cydia app you will find that there is no source, hence you to go to the Sources panel and add ‘http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7‘ repo to the sources allowing you to use all the features of Cydia allowing you to install cracked apps. Now once the repo is added and Cydia is restarted you will find the the original icon is restored and the sources are available to use.

What do you mean by “proceed towards backing up a copy of the updated ipsw file on your desktop because the software would need this while jailbreaking”?
I can’t figure out what file you mean to back up and later choose when jailbreaking. PLEASE HELP!
