The problem with chat networks is that you can’t talk to all of your close ones since one maybe available in Google Talk and other maybe available in Yahoo Messenger, some like to be MSN and some likes AIM since cross adding of other IM contacts is not allowed. Pidgin is an open source multi messenger chat program which allows the user to log in to all the famous chatting networks simultaneously and interesting thing about this open source software is you can converse in your known regional language. With Pidgin you don’t need to install seperate program for Yahoo Messenger, Google talk, AIM, IRC, MSN, Sametime, MySpace IM, SIMPLE, Zephyr, Bojour, Groupwise, QQ, Gadu Gadu, ICQ chat, MXit, SILC and XMPP. You can also add more chat network with their available plugins. The official and third party plugins available for download at Development section at their website. This plugins can modify the software behavior in a number of ways. Once these plugins are downloaded and installed it can be accessed moving to “Tools” then Plugins from the menu bar.
With the third party Plugins you can run other lesser known network likes Microblog (Clone of Twitter), MXit IM, NateOn, NetNexus, Netsoul, Ning, OkCupid, Omegle, Rediffbol, Skype IM, SIPE, Tlen.pl, Xfire and can send SMS through Gammu through your phone via USB/ Serial/ Bluetooth/IRDA ports. You can even configure plugin for auto ignoring yahoo spammers, stop spam bots. The latest version comes with twenty two plugins pre-installed with the client.
Pidgin supports supports translation to more than 80 regional languages all over the world. Unlike other third party chat clients Pidgin supports features like file transfers, pause, resume or cancel the file transfers, multiple transfers in seperate windows, folder sharing feature which is lacking in all IM, away messages, customized icons, smilies and lot more to your comfort by downloading numerous plugins. Latest version v 2.6 and higher allows voice and video chats through conversation in Google Talk. In future the same development will also allow voice and video conversation to your Yahoo and MSN contacts.
Once you download the software and run it will ask you for IM account configuration. You need to add all of your IM network logins one by one. Pidgin also supports tabbed chatting through their single window. According to the statistics the number of Pidgin users were over 3 million in 2007 and increase in the following years.
